My girlfriend looked me dead in the eye, laughed and said, "Go ahead, break up with me." She had just told me she spent the weekend in a hotel with her ex, and she said it the way you'd admit to finishing the milk. I didn't raise my voice. I walked into the bedroom, pulled down the silver suitcase I bought her for Portugal, and started packing my own shirts into it while she stood in the doorway still laughing because she thought she knew exactly what I was worth to her. She was wrong by about 9 days.

That's how long I had until I signed for a place she was never going to see the inside of. I'm 31. Tessa is 29. 3 years together, two of them in the apartment I paid for, and for the last 4 months she had been asking me the same question in about 40 different ways. "When are you putting my name on it?"

We'd had an offer accepted on a condo across the river, a real one, two bedrooms, a balcony that got the evening light. My savings, my down payment. Her name on nothing. She called that unromantic. She said if I really saw a future with her, I wouldn't be so careful with her.

I kept telling her I'd talk to the broker. I kept not talking to the broker. I didn't know why yet. I just knew my hand stopped every time I got near that form. Here's how it came apart.

On a Tuesday night, around 11:00, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter while I was washing a pan. A confirmation email from a hotel chain, not an ad. A real one with a booking number and a folio and a thank you for using your rewards points. The points account was mine. I'd been dumping 6 years of work travel into it.

Tessa had the login because she always booked our flights. The reservation was for the previous Friday and Saturday. One room, one king bed, two nights. The same Friday and Saturday she told me she was at her sister's baby shower 3 hours north. The weekend she came home tired and sunburned and said the drive had wrecked her.

I stood there with soap on my hands and read it four times. And the worst part wasn't the room, it was how ordinary it looked sitting in my inbox between a shipping notice and a dentist reminder. I didn't say anything that night. I want to be honest about that. I lay next to her in the dark for 6 hours doing math, and by morning I wasn't angry anymore.

I was cold. Cold is worse. The next morning I called the hotel from my car before work and asked them to resend the folio for that reservation. Said I was reconciling some expenses. The woman on the line was lovely about it.

She read it back to me. Room charge, parking, two breakfasts, a bar tab of $140, and then she said the thing that took the floor out from under me. She said, "And I have a second guest listed on the room, a Mr. Daniel Reyes. Would you like him on the copy as well?"
