He leaned against the frame with a cup of coffee in his hand, and he watched the three of them in the morning light that came through the south window. The window that had been dark all winter. The window that faced the sun. The stove was warm. The bread was rising.

Jun's coat hung on the hook by the door, creamcoled and carefully made, and beside it hung Samuels, the pair of them side by side like two small people waiting to go outside. Eli drank his coffee. He did not speak. He did not need to. The house was speaking for him.

In the creek of the floorboards and the hum of the child and the turning of pages and the smell of yeast and woodsm smoke. All of it saying the same thing in a language that did not require words. The trunk at the foot of Claraara's bed was still empty. She had not filled it with new things. She had not needed to.

The room was enough. The window was enough. The quilt on the bed and the fire in the stove and the brass button on the sill catching the first light of an April morning were enough. Some houses die in winter.

This one did not. It held and it thawed, and what grew back was not what had been there before, but something that had its own roots now, something that would hold against whatever came next. The door to the pantry stayed open. Nobody slept there anymore.

The shelves went back in and the cot went to the barn and the room became what it had always been meant to be. A room for flour and lard and jars of preserves. A room where food was stored instead of a woman. Outside the meadowarks were back.

June could hear them from the kitchen and she stopped humming to listen. And then she started again fitting her own small sound between theirs. And Clara smiled. And the morning went on.
