She explained that the investigation forced her to read her own messages in order instead of remembering each as an isolated joke. Every time Imani entered a space Blaire associated with wealth, achievement, or Crestwood tradition, Blaire searched for a reason she was there through exception rather than merit.

Race shaped that search.

Money shaped it too.

Neither excused it.

Then Imani asked about the gas station.

“Why did you get out of the car?”

Blaire covered her face for a second.

“Because seeing you with that car made me angry.”

“Why?”

“I thought you were showing off.”

“I was buying gas.”

“I know.”

Blaire looked ashamed.

“I wanted to embarrass you in front of Megan.”

Imani nodded.

“And when I tried to leave?”

“I thought you were making me look stupid.”

“So you punched me.”

“Yes.”

Silence settled between them.

Blaire apologized again.

Imani accepted the apology without offering friendship.

Before leaving, she said one final thing.

“My dad owning that car does not make what you said worse.”

Blaire nodded.

“If I had borrowed it, your behavior would still have been racist.”

“I know.”

“If my father actually were only an employee at the shop, you would still have been wrong.”

“I know.”

“That’s the part I need you to understand.”

Blaire looked at her.

“I do now.”

Graduation arrived in June. Crestwood held the ceremony on the main lawn beneath white tents, with families seated in rows facing the stone administration building. Camille cried before the seniors entered.

Darius pretended not to.

Imani caught him wiping his eyes during the opening speech.

Blaire crossed the stage earlier in the ceremony. Her family applauded, nobody booed, and nothing dramatic happened.
