Came again.

Zoe backed toward a folding table.

Mallory threw another wide hand.

Zoe intercepted the wrist.

Redirected.

Released.

No punch back.

Mallory’s face reddened.

The crowd had stopped laughing completely.

Phones remained raised.

Now they were evidence.

Mallory lunged again.

Zoe put both palms against her upper arms and pushed outward.

Not a strike.

Distance.

Mallory stumbled backward.

Caught herself.

Then charged once more.

Naomi screamed:

“Stop!”

Mallory swung.

Zoe stepped aside.

Caught one arm near the elbow.

Turned with the momentum.

Released.

Mallory’s feet landed in the scattered Jenga blocks.

One rolled.

Her balance broke.

She twisted.

Tried to recover.

Then fell hard onto the grass beside the collapsed tower.

One leg kicked upward.

Her shoulder hit first.

Then hip.

Silence.

Zoe stopped instantly.

No step toward her.

No kick.

No follow-up.

She stood breathing hard.

Mallory looked up from the ground.

Humiliation replaced anger.

Zoe looked toward the block she had thrown aside.

Walked over.

Picked it up.

Not because she needed it.

Because her brain apparently could not leave objects scattered during an event she helped organize.

Naomi stared.

“You’re picking up Jenga?”

Zoe almost laughed.

It came out as one breath.

She looked at Mallory.

Then at the phones.

No speech.

No victory line.

She placed the block on the folding table.

And walked away.

The fair remained silent for another three seconds.

Then everybody started talking at once.

The first school report used the phrase:

physical altercation between two senior students following a disagreement at an activity station.

Gillian read it twenty minutes later.

She hated it immediately.

“What disagreement?”

The campus aide shrugged.

“That’s what I was told.”

“By who?”

“Mallory.”

Zoe was with the nurse.

Mallory sat inside the activities office with ice on her shoulder.

The aide had interviewed whoever was closest.

That happened to be the girl still at the scene.

Gillian deleted the sentence.

“Start again.”

By then videos had arrived.

Several showed the tower collapse.

One angle captured Mallory’s hand clearly.

Push.

Tower.

Zoe ducking.

Others captured the argument.

The physical sequence.

Grab.

Shove.

Swing.

Retreat.

Fall.

That should have made discipline simple.

It did not.

Because twenty minutes after the incident, a second conflict started.

Parents.

Donors.

Fair operations.

Rumors.

Students insisting Zoe “beat up” Mallory.

Others insisting Mallory “tried to crush her.”

Neither description was accurate.

The school placed both students in separate rooms while reviewing.

Zoe’s parents arrived.

Gerald’s first question:

“Is she hurt?”

Minor bruising.

Scraped forearm.

Nothing serious.

Dana watched the video.

She flinched when the tower came down.

Then watched Mallory grab.

Swing.

Fall.
