Coffee still covered almost half the metal surface.

She lifted the binder carefully.

Brown liquid poured from the bottom edge.

Pages sagged.

She held it against one hand.

Grabbed her bag.

And walked away.

Brooke stayed on the ground behind her.

That was the end of the clip most of Westbridge eventually saw.

It was not the end of the morning.

Cassidy found Nyla inside the history classroom ten minutes later holding paper towels between binder pages.

Harper had placed absorbent sheets across two desks.

Nyla’s hands were shaking.

“Are you hurt?”

Cassidy asked.

“No.”

“Did she hit you?”

“She tried.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“My arm hurts.”

Harper looked up.

“Nurse.”

“I’m fine.”

“Nurse.”

Nyla started to object.

Harper pointed toward the door.

“History has survived worse than forty minutes without you.”

She laughed despite herself.

Then cried.

Not dramatically.

The tears simply arrived while she was still laughing.

Cassidy hugged her.

Nyla stared at the ruined binder.

“I knew it was backed up.”

“I know.”

“I knew she couldn’t destroy the project.”

“I know.”

“So why am I this upset?”

Cassidy looked at the pages.

“Because she wanted to.”

That was it.

Not loss.

Intent.

Brooke had wanted months of Nyla’s work to disappear.

The nurse documented bruising on Nyla’s forearm and redness near one shoulder.

No serious injury.

Brooke had a scrape on her elbow from the fall.

Assistant Principal Grant separated everyone.

Three students provided videos.

One recording began seconds before Brooke emptied the cup.

Another started during the argument.

A third captured the physical encounter from the side.

The sequence was unusually clear.

Brooke approached.

Brooke poured.

Nyla stood.

Brooke blocked movement.

Brooke shoved first.

Brooke swung first.

Nyla repeatedly retreated.

Nyla used force only when Brooke advanced.

Nyla stopped when Brooke fell.

No suspension for Nyla.

Brooke received an immediate ten-day suspension pending a broader harassment investigation.

Christine Whitman arrived before noon.

She watched the video inside Grant’s office.

Her face changed when the coffee poured.

Then again when Brooke swung.

She asked to replay the beginning.

Grant did.

Brooke stood beside her mother.

Silent.

Christine looked at her daughter.

“Why?”

Brooke crossed her arms.

“She has been harassing our family for months.”

Grant responded before anyone else.

“Researching public records is not harassment.”

Christine looked toward her.

“She has been targeting my father.”

“She has been completing a school-approved capstone.”

“About my father.”

“Partly.”

Christine’s voice rose.

“She dug through his files.”

“They are county archival records.”

“Exactly.”

Grant waited.

Christine heard herself.

Her expression shifted slightly.

The distinction was becoming harder to sustain.

Brooke finally spoke.

“She wants everyone to think Grandpa was racist.”
