“You swung first.”

“Everybody saw you.”

Sloane’s face changed.

The audience she had wanted had become witnesses.

Ms. Mendoza arrived seconds later.

“What happened?”

Sloane began speaking first.

Maya did not.

She crouched beside the bouquet.

Half the stems had broken.

Petals were embedded in damp grass.

The paper wrap was torn open.

She picked up what remained.

That image spread online later too.

Not Maya defending herself.

Maya kneeling alone beside ruined orange flowers while adults separated everybody else.

The school brought both girls inside.

Jalen and Tessa followed as witnesses.

Sloane’s parents were called.

Nicole left the emergency department halfway through a shift.

Calvin drove from a property inspection.

Maya sat inside Assistant Principal Brooks’s conference room holding the damaged bouquet across her lap because she had refused to leave it outside.

Brooks gave her water.

“Are you hurt?”

“My forearm.”

“Anywhere else?”

“No.”

“Did you hit Sloane?”

“No.”

“Did you push her?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When she kept coming at me.”

Brooks nodded.

“Okay.”

Maya looked at her.

“That’s it?”

“For now.”

Brooks gestured toward the phones sitting on her desk.

“We have multiple videos.”

Maya’s shoulders lowered slightly.

The relief bothered her.

“What if there weren’t videos?”

Brooks did not offer false comfort.

“Then this would be harder.”

Maya looked toward the flowers.

That answer stayed with her.

Nicole arrived first.

She entered the room still wearing navy hospital scrubs and hugged Maya before asking a single question.

Then she saw the bouquet.

Her eyes changed.

“Those were from Jalen?”

Maya nodded.

Nicole sat beside her.

“What happened?”

Maya told the entire sequence.

The UNC conversation.

The grabbing.

The flowers.

The stepping.

The physical attack.

The push.

When she finished, Nicole asked whether Maya wished she had done anything differently.

Maya looked surprised.

“I don’t know.”

“That is allowed.”

“I got angry.”
