Training records.
Complaints.
Staffing assignments.
Emails between Sentinel Shield and Bellweather administrators.
Instructions distributed before the gala.
She also requested three years of incident reports involving removal, trespass, solicitation, loitering, or “appearance concerns.”
That final phrase surprised Adrian.
It appeared in Sentinel Shield’s training materials.
He read it twice.
Appearance concern: individual whose clothing, hygiene, behavior, or presentation is inconsistent with the expected environment and may warrant proactive engagement.
Adrian called Evelyn.
“What does that mean?”
“I intend to ask.”
“It sounds like profiling written by a committee.”
“Yes.”
“Was Bellweather aware?”
“That is another thing I intend to ask.”
Adrian closed the file.
His mother had been right.
The problem had already grown larger than Gavin Rourke.
Chapter 5: The Incident Report
Gavin filed his written account at 10:48 the night of the gala.
He stated that Margaret entered through a restricted service corridor, failed to produce valid identification, approached donors despite multiple warnings, became verbally confrontational, and physically resisted removal. He described the contact with her wrist as a “brief stabilizing hold” used only after she attempted to move past him. He wrote that her cane broke when she “lost balance during resistance.”
Three cameras showed otherwise.
Margaret arrived at 5:52.
She approached the South Courtyard checkpoint.
She opened the invitation before Gavin ever spoke to her.
He looked at the envelope but never accepted it.
Instead, he pointed toward the service path.
Margaret apparently asked something.
There was no audio at that camera.
Gavin pointed again.
She remained where she was.
Then another guard approached.
The footage showed Margaret hold up the invitation a second time.
Gavin pushed it downward with one hand.
She tried stepping toward the stairs.
That was when he took her wrist.
Hard.
Margaret recoiled.
Her cane slipped.
Gavin pulled again.
The cane struck the stone and broke.
Margaret did not strike him.
Push him.
Grab him.
Or move toward any donor.
She never made it within thirty feet of the terrace.
The report was not merely unflattering.
It was false.
Judge Marsh interviewed Gavin two days later.
He brought an attorney.
That was his right.
He began confidently.
“Video never shows context.”
Evelyn folded her hands.
“Sometimes it shows movement.”
Gavin nodded.
“Movement can be misinterpreted.”
“Did Mrs. Whitaker show you an envelope?”
“Yes.”
“Did you read it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I had no reason to believe it was a valid credential.”
“What reason did you have to believe it was not?”
Gavin hesitated.
“She didn’t present like an invited guest.”
Evelyn waited.
He seemed to realize what he had said.
“What does an invited guest present like?”
“You know what I mean.”
“I would prefer you explain.”
Gavin shifted.
“The gala was black tie.”
“Mrs. Whitaker was wearing a cardigan.”
