David said, slowly backing down the porch steps. ""My name is David Campbell. I am the homeowner. If you let me open the door, I can show you the deed, the closing paperwork, and my identification."" "Shut your mouth and turn around." Dugan snapped, closing the distance between them. ""Hands on the back of your head. Interlace your fingers."" David's mind raced.

He was a federal agent. He had a badge, a Glock 19, and federal credentials sitting on his kitchen counter, no more than 20 ft away. He also knew that if he reached for the doorknob, Dugan would likely shoot him in the back. The neighborhood was dead quiet now. Across the street, David saw the curtains part in Mrs. Higgins's living room window.

She was watching, choosing survival over pride. David slowly turned his back to the officer, placed his hands behind his head, and interlaced his fingers. ""Officer, I need you to listen to me very carefully. I am a sworn federal law enforcement agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You are making a massive mistake."" Dugan let out a harsh, barking laugh as he closed in. He grabbed David's interlaced fingers with one hand and kicked David's legs apart with his heavy black boots. ""Yeah, right.

And I'm the king of England. You guys always have a story, don't you?"" Before David could respond, Dugan shoved him forcefully forward. David's chest slammed against the aluminum siding of his own garage. The breath was knocked out of him. Cold steel bit brutally into his left wrist, clicking tightly, followed immediately by the right.

The handcuffs were ratcheted down so hard they instantly pinched a nerve, sending a shooting pain up David's forearms. "Officer, the cuffs are too tight." David said evenly, keeping his composure. He knew the body camera was rolling. Let Dugan hang himself with the footage. ""My wallet is inside.

Run my name. David James Campbell."" Dugan ignored him. He aggressively patted David down, his hands roughly searching the sweatpants pockets. He pulled out the keychain. "If you live here, why are you trying to break in?"

Dugan sneered, holding the keys up. "Those are the house keys." David replied, exasperated. ""Test them on the door. It takes three seconds."" "I don't take orders from burglars." Dugan spat.

He grabbed David by the bicep, his fingers digging into the muscle, and yanked him away from the house. ""You're under arrest for attempted burglary, trespassing, and resisting a peace officer."" "Resisting?" David repeated, his calm facade cracking just a fraction. ""You told me to put my hands on my head, and I did. I haven't resisted at all."" "You argued with a lawful command." Dugan countered, marching David down the driveway. He shoved the federal agent into the back of the cruiser, slamming the heavy reinforced door shut.

Inside the sweltering cage of the patrol car, David sat awkwardly on his cuffed hands. He took a deep breath, staring out the window at his new house, his half-broken down boxes still sitting on the driveway. The anger was beginning to bubble up, a cold, calculated fury. Dugan hadn't just humiliated him. He had violated his civil rights, assaulted a federal officer, and done it with the casual arrogance of a man who believed he was utterly untouchable.
