“Both of you will report to your watch commander after this contact ends. Every body-camera file is preserved, the original dispatch call is preserved, and no report gets finalized until a supervisor reviews the entire sequence.” Marcus nodded immediately, and Ethan followed.

Andre then turned toward Malcolm.

“Dr. Hayes, on behalf of the Cleveland Police Department, I apologize.”

Malcolm shook his head.

“You do not need to apologize because I’m your brother.”

“I’m not.”

Andre looked toward the hospital staff.

“I’m apologizing because a citizen provided evidence, multiple people confirmed it, and officers continued treating suspicion like it mattered more than facts.”

Malcolm held his gaze.

That answer mattered.

Before either brother could say anything else, Denise’s pager sounded.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

“Doctor.”

Malcolm turned.

“Emily Foster is crashing.”

Everything else disappeared from his expression.

“What happened?”

“Pressure dropped in ICU.”

“CT?”

“Possible internal bleed.”

Malcolm looked toward Andre.

The chief nodded immediately.

“Go.”

Malcolm took his bag.

Ethan stared.

“You’re going back to work?”

Malcolm stopped at the doors and looked over his shoulder.

“There’s a twenty-three-year-old woman upstairs who has absolutely no interest in what happened to me on this sidewalk.”

Then he disappeared inside.

Chapter 6: Back Under the Lights

Malcolm’s wrists were still red when he scrubbed in. One nurse noticed and asked if he needed somebody else to take the case. He shook his head and told the team to focus on Emily. Within minutes, the operating room swallowed every emotion he had carried from outside.

Emily had developed bleeding around tissue that appeared stable during the first operation. Her blood pressure kept dropping despite transfusion. Malcolm reopened the abdomen, located the source, and spent nearly three hours working beneath bright surgical lights while his own exhaustion became something to manage rather than something he could indulge. Nobody inside the room mentioned police.

At 10:52 a.m., Emily stabilized again.

Malcolm stood over her for several seconds after the final closure, watching the monitors and refusing to trust them too quickly. Then he stepped away. “All right,” he said softly. “Let’s get her back upstairs.”

He changed gowns and walked into a consultation room where Emily’s parents had spent the morning sitting so close together their shoulders touched. Her mother stood immediately. Malcolm removed his surgical cap.

“She made it through.”

The woman’s knees nearly gave way.

Emily’s father covered his face with both hands.

Malcolm explained that the next twenty-four hours remained dangerous but that the bleeding had been controlled and Emily was stable. Her mother crossed the room and hugged him before he had time to react.

“Thank you.”

Malcolm closed his eyes.

For half a second he remembered metal closing around his wrists.

Then he opened them again.

“You’ve got a long road ahead,” he told her. “But you still have one.”

That afternoon, after nearly thirty hours awake, Malcolm finally changed clothes and prepared to go home.

Andre was waiting in the doctors’ lounge.

Chapter 7: Two Brothers

Malcolm saw the uniform first.

“You’re still here?”

Andre nodded.

Malcolm poured coffee.

“You realize normal people sleep.”

“You have not slept either.”

“I never claimed to be normal.”

Andre almost smiled.

Then Malcolm noticed his expression.

“You got the body-camera footage.”

“Yes.”

“And?”
