“They are visible.”

“Out!”

“Call your supervisor.”

Boone moved toward his holster.

Malcolm made his decision.

“I am reaching for federal credentials.”

Boone shouted.

“He’s reaching!”

Eli spoke louder.

“He said federal credentials!”

The wallet came out.

The badge appeared.

Everything changed.

Too quickly.

Boone stepped backward.

His shoulders lowered.

His voice softened.

“You’re FBI?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say that?”

Malcolm stared at him.

“You never gave me a safe opportunity.”

Boone looked at the badge again.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

“No.”

“You were being difficult.”

“No.”

“You weren’t following commands.”

“Your commands contradicted one another.”

Boone glanced toward Eli.

The rookie said nothing.

Malcolm continued.

“You asked for my license and told me not to reach for it.”

“You ordered me out and then stopped me when I moved to release my seat belt.”

“You broke a government vehicle window while I sat with both hands visible.”

Boone swallowed.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

Malcolm looked at him.

“That should not be your defense.”

Eli walked around the front of the Lamborghini.

Glass covered the driver’s seat.

A small line of blood ran down Malcolm’s cheek.

Eli looked toward his own body camera.

The red indicator was still on.

Malcolm noticed.

“Keep it running.”

Boone said, “He doesn’t get to tell us—”

Eli interrupted.

“I’m keeping mine on.”

Boone stared at him.

Eli’s face was pale.

But he did not look away.

Malcolm nodded.

“Good.”

Then he called the FBI duty supervisor responsible for the operation and vehicle.

No dramatic phone call to Washington.

No FBI director.

No attorney general.

Just the people whose actual job was to secure the operation, the undercover agent, and the federal property.

Malcolm explained the situation.

Traffic stop.

Broken window.

Minor injury.

No gunfire.

Local supervisor requested.

Federal personnel dispatched.

Eli called his watch commander.

Captain Raymond Foster arrived fourteen minutes later.

He stepped from his SUV and stopped when he saw the Lamborghini.

Broken driver’s window.

Glass on the pavement.

Boone standing ten feet away.

Eli near the hood.

Malcolm seated inside holding an FBI credential wallet.

Foster walked toward the car.

“Agent Reed?”

“Yes.”

“Are you injured?”

“Small cut.”

“Need medical?”

“Not urgently.”

Foster looked toward Boone.

“Tell me what happened.”

Boone answered immediately.

“Observed the vehicle drifting.”

“Conducted lawful traffic stop.”

“Driver became argumentative.”

“Wouldn’t follow commands.”

“Made a sudden movement toward his jacket.”

“I used the baton to gain compliance.”

Malcolm remained quiet.

Foster turned toward Eli.
