“You have ID?” “In my wallet, left front pocket. May I get it?” “Slow.” She retrieves the learner's permit. The photo matches.

The name is printed clearly. Caldwell, Amina R. She holds it out. Rowe takes it without looking and passes it to Selden. Selden studies the permit.

“This says she's 17.” “I'm aware.” Rowe has not taken his eyes off Amina. “Who else is in the car?” “No one.” “Where were you coming from?”

“My school. I stayed late for tutoring.” “I was driving back alone in a Lamborghini.” “Yes, sir.” Something in the calm accuracy of her answers irritates him more than any argument would. He reaches past her and opens the driver's door without asking.

His forearm brushes her shoulder. She takes one small step aside and does not react. “Registration,” he says to Selden. Selden has already opened the glove box. She pulls out the folded envelope, opens it, reads.

For a moment her expression does not move, but something behind it recalibrates. “Registered to Amari G. Caldwell, Harford County address, current, no flags.” Rowe glances back at her. A look passes between them that Amina does not miss. She files it away the way she files most things, without comment, without visible reaction.

Stored precisely. “We're going to need to run this,” Rowe says. “It's already registered. The sticker is current. The name matches my ID.”

“Young lady.” He turns back to her and the edge in his voice is meant to close the door. “I did not ask you to explain vehicle registration law to me. Stand here. Don't move.”

He walks to his cruiser. The radio crackles. Selden stays at the passenger side looking at Amina with an expression calibrated to appear sympathetic. “You understand we're just doing our jobs,” she says. “A call came in. We have to follow up.”

Amina says nothing. “Is there someone you can call? A parent?” “My father is traveling.” “Traveling where?”

“For work.” Selden waits, but nothing more comes. She glances toward the cruiser. “It would help if you had someone who could come verify.” “The registration verifies it.”

Amina's voice is even, factual, the way a truth stands when it needs nothing else. “The law requires the registered owner's name on state-issued documentation. The documentation matches my name. It matches the plates. There is nothing left to verify.”
