Ryan rubbed his jaw.
“There’s context.”
“Great.”
I stood.
“Give me the context.”
He hesitated.
“You've been working constantly. You and Claire haven't been doing well for a long time.”
That was the wrong answer.
Not because it excused anything.
Because it told me he knew details about my marriage I had never discussed with him.
Claire turned sharply.
“Ryan.”
One word.
A warning.
I understood.
She had been discussing me with him.
Our sex life.
My schedule.
My work.
Our arguments.
Everything I thought belonged inside my marriage had become material for the affair.
“How long?”
Claire looked away.
“How long has this been happening?”
“I don't know what you want me to say.”
“The truth.”
Ryan said:
“This isn't the time.”
I looked at him.
“You seemed comfortable with the timing ten minutes ago.”
His jaw tightened.
Claire folded her arms.
Then the defensive version of her appeared.
“You went through the security system without telling me.”
For several seconds, I simply stared.
“You waited for me to become unconscious and brought my business partner into our bedroom, and your complaint is that I reviewed the security system in my own house?”
“That isn't what I meant.”
“It is exactly what you meant.”
Ryan raised both hands.
“We all need to calm down.”
I pointed at him.
“You don't get to manage this meeting.”
That landed.
Ryan had spent twelve years managing meetings.
When clients became angry, he softened his voice.
When employees panicked, he reorganized the conversation.
He could make the other person feel irrational while appearing reasonable.
But this was not a client problem.
This was my house.
My wife.
My company.
And for the first time, Ryan had no position from which to moderate me.
Claire looked past my shoulder.
Then froze.
The living-room camera.
Red light.
“You're recording this.”
“Yes.”
“Turn it off.”
“No.”
“Grant.”
“No.”
She stepped toward me.
Ryan reached for her wrist instinctively.
Claire jerked away.
“Don't touch me.”
They stared at each other.
Something broke between them.
Not the affair.
The alliance.
I watched their faces.
“What aren't you telling each other?”
“Nothing,” Claire said.
Too quickly.
My phone vibrated.
Another archived event appeared beneath the protected recording.
Three nights earlier.
OFFICE SENSOR DISABLED — CLAIRE HOLLOWAY ADMIN ACCESS
I opened it.
Claire saw the line.
Her face changed.
“Grant, don't.”
Now I knew.
