Chapter 12: The Morning After
My phone was full of messages when I woke.
Please answer.
I’m sorry.
I love you.
Let me explain.
We can survive this.
I blocked her.
Then I changed the locks.
My lawyer started the divorce filing.
Fortunately, my father had insisted on a prenuptial agreement when we married. The condo had been mine before the wedding, so Melissa had no claim to it, while assets accumulated during the marriage would be divided according to the law.
Luis stopped me that afternoon.
“I need to tell you something.”
He admitted his sore shoulder had been fake.
“What?”
“I wanted you to ask about the massage therapist.”
I stared.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
Luis had noticed Cole coming through the building when I was away and knew something was wrong. He did not want to accuse my wife directly, so he created an excuse that would force the subject into conversation.
I hugged him.
Probably surprised both of us.
“You saved me another year.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“She did that.”
“All I did was stop helping the lie.”
Chapter 13: What Happened to Cole
For several days, Cole tried contacting me.
I ignored him.
Then I visited the gym where he had originally worked.
The owner, Greg Mason, remembered Melissa and me immediately.
When I explained why we had left, his expression changed.
Then I showed him enough evidence to establish that one of his coaches had begun a sexual relationship with a member he had met through the gym.
Greg sat quietly for a long time.
Finally he said:
“You're not going to like what I tell you.”
Apparently, Cole had developed a reputation for flirting with female members long before Melissa.
Several complaints had been made.
Nothing serious enough to terminate him.
Then approximately eight months earlier, the complaints suddenly stopped.
Cole became more professional.
More focused.
Greg had assumed he had matured.
Now he understood.
He had simply focused on one woman.
My wife.
There was another surprise.
The private residential home where I had followed Melissa did not belong to Cole.
It belonged to Greg’s late father.
Greg stored old fitness equipment there and had given Cole a key for occasional access.
Not permission to live there.
Not permission to bring women there.
Cole had apparently copied the key.
Greg was furious.
Then another trainer told me something almost funny.
Cole was in love with Melissa.
Or believed he was.
He had been telling coworkers he wanted to marry her.
He also wanted children.
When I heard that, I laughed.
I could not stop.
Greg stared at me as if I had lost my mind.
Maybe I had for a minute.
Melissa and I had spent nearly a decade trying to become parents.
Doctors eventually discovered her fertility issues made natural conception extremely unlikely. After multiple failed treatments, Melissa told me she no longer wanted to keep trying.
Cole did not know any of that.
He thought he was stealing another man’s wife and building his own future.
What he actually inherited was a secret relationship built entirely on lies.
Karma did not need my help.
Chapter 14: Cole Wants His Girlfriend Back
I ran into Cole one last time.
Not accidentally.
One of his trainer friends called him after seeing me at the gym.
I realized what was happening and decided to stay.
Cole arrived ten minutes later.
He walked toward me with his hand extended.
“Listen, buddy—”
