“No.”

I looked at him.

“Do you have messages?”

“Yes.”

Chris opened another folder.

Grant to Chris:

Michael will be fine once he sees projected returns. Lauren can manage him.

Another:

Need ownership docs on Michael’s house.

Another:

Do not copy him yet. Lauren wants everything in place first.

Then Chris’s reply:

I’m not comfortable with that.

Grant:

It’s diligence, not commitment.

Chris:

No signature, no collateral.

Grant:

Understood.

I looked at my brother.

“You pushed back.”

“Yes.”

“But not enough to tell me.”

“No.”

That was the tragedy of Chris.

He had not been fully against me.

He had simply never been willing to risk enough for me.

Every line he refused to cross made him feel righteous.

Every line he allowed somebody else to cross made him complicit.

“You took eighteen thousand dollars.”

“For work.”

“On a project using my assets.”

“I didn't know it would get that far.”

“That is negligence dressed as innocence.”

Chris looked hurt.

Good.

Sometimes truth should hurt.

Then Denise asked:

“Do you have all correspondence?”

“Yes.”

“Original metadata?”

“Yes.”

“Backups?”

Chris nodded.

She looked at me.

“This helps.”

I hated that helping legally did not repair anything personally.

CHAPTER 4: GRANT KELLER’S REAL DEAL

The more records we found, the less the affair looked like the biggest deception.

Grant Keller had been in trouble before he ever met Lauren.

Riverstone Commons was not his first ambitious development.

Three years earlier, he led a warehouse conversion project outside Durham.

It failed.

Two lenders sued.

One investor claimed Grant misrepresented pre-leasing commitments.

The case settled confidentially.

A second project stalled after interest rates rose.

Grant owed private investors millions.

None of that made him a criminal.

It made him desperate.

Riverstone Commons was supposed to rescue him.

The location was strong.

Mixed retail.

Apartments.

Medical offices.

Potential.

But the financing gap was large.

Grant needed credible personal balance sheets attached to the capital package.

Lauren had mentioned our house.

Not maliciously at first.

During one dinner, she told him we had significant equity because I bought before prices rose.

Grant remembered.

Later he asked for approximate value.

Lauren gave it.

Then mortgage balance.

Then title information.

At every step, she told herself she was sharing information, not property.

That was how boundaries moved.

Never all at once.

Grant built a model.

My house became a number.

The number became collateral support.

Then a loan application.

Then a missing signature became an obstacle.

And obstacles are dangerous around desperate people.

Denise found evidence Grant’s loan processor had repeatedly asked for my authorization.

Grant kept delaying.

Then he wrote:

Lauren will handle Michael’s signature.

Was he planning forgery?

We could not prove it.

Had he believed Lauren would pressure me?

Possible.

Had Lauren implied she could?

Also possible.

The uncertainty did not help their case.

Then another surprise.

Grant had used the same reserve package to approach three lenders.

My assets were not tied to one attempted loan.

They were being shopped.

The moment I understood that, the affair stopped being personal.

At least partly.

This was financial exposure.

I filed a fraud alert.

Property title monitoring.

Credit freezes.

Notice to institutions.

My house had never felt like something I needed to defend from my own marriage before.

Now every document looked vulnerable.

CHAPTER 5: LAUREN COMES BACK

Lauren came to the house eleven days after leaving.
