He replaced the Explorer six months later.
Not with a Range Rover.
Not with a Mercedes.
He bought another Ford.
Newer. Better safety equipment.
Still practical.
Mark Ellison stared at it in the office parking lot. "Roger Barry bought a new vehicle."
"The old one had 164,000 miles."
"So you finally admit cars can die."
"They can become inefficient to maintain."
Mark shook his head. "Never mind."
Roger's expanded partnership role changed his work. Fewer routine inspections. More client meetings.
More responsibility for junior inspectors. More time reviewing complex reports before they went out.
His income increased. His schedule improved.
The strange part was that none of it felt like revenge.
Kimberly did not need to know.
Jason did not need to know.
Roger did not buy anything to prove he had won.
That word had stopped making sense.
A divorce did not produce a winner.
It produced an afterward.
Roger concentrated on making his useful.
The final lender resolution arrived nearly seven months after the divorce.
Amanda called him. Roger was sitting on the new deck drinking coffee.
"Do I need to come downtown?"
"No."
"That sounds promising."
"It is."
The lender had completed the relevant review and adjusted treatment of the disputed transactions consistent with its findings and the legal resolution surrounding the accounts.
Amanda explained the details carefully.
Roger listened.
He asked three questions. Then one more.
When he understood, he said, "Okay."
Amanda laughed. "That's all?"
"What else?"
"I don't know. Maybe celebrate."
Roger looked across the backyard. A squirrel ran along the fence.
"I think I'm done celebrating paperwork."
"Fair."
He thanked her before hanging up.
Amanda said, "You handled this better than most people would."
Roger looked at his coffee. "No. I handled it the only way I knew how."
That was the point.
The call ended.
Roger sat outside another 10 minutes. Then he went inside and placed the final lender letter into a file cabinet.
He did not frame it.
He did not keep it on the desk.
It was a record.
Nothing more.
Kimberly appeared in his life only once after that.
Not physically.
