He claims Nia has manipulated him and insists that the papers are worthless lies created to turn him against his own town. Caleb refuses to hand over the evidence. Vance reminds him that nobody will believe an Apache woman over a respected sheriff. Nia responds calmly that the documents contain names, dates, payments, and signatures. If Vance wants them destroyed, she says, then everyone will know exactly why.

Vance orders his men forward. Caleb and Nia move deeper into the canyon, using the narrow passages to keep the riders from surrounding them. During the escape, the metal container falls from Caleb's horse and slides toward the dry riverbed. Caleb risks capture to retrieve it. Nia waits for him instead of escaping alone.

Together, they reach a hidden trail that leads out of the canyon. Caleb finally understands that the evidence is more than proof of an old crime. It is the unfinished work of two fathers who believe their children might someday discover the truth. As night falls, Caleb looks at Nia and promises that he will not allow the men who destroyed their families to erase the truth again. They turn their horses toward town, carrying the evidence that could change everything.

Caleb and Nia leave the canyon before sunrise, carrying the documents that could expose the men responsible for years of violence. Caleb knows they cannot simply disappear into the wilderness. If they run, Sheriff Vance and his allies will control the story and destroy the evidence. Nia suggests taking the records to a judge in the nearest larger settlement, but Caleb believes they must first return to the town where the entire nightmare began. They stop at an abandoned church outside town and examine the papers again.

Among the ledgers, Caleb discovers a list of names, dates, payments, and locations connected to the staged attacks. One name appears repeatedly and makes his stomach tighten. Elias Mercer. His father's name is written besides several payments. Caleb struggles to breathe as he reads the final pages of his father's journal.

Elias had discovered that wealthy land owners and corrupt officials were using fear to force families from valuable land. He had planned to send the evidence to authorities, but someone close to him betrayed him before he could finish. Nia tells Caleb that her father faced the same danger. He disappeared after refusing to reveal where the records were hidden. For years, Nia believed she had failed him because she survived while he did not.

Caleb admits that he has carried the same guilt about his own father. The two realize that neither of them can change what happened to their fathers. They can only decide what to do with the truth they left behind. Caleb wants to confront Vance immediately, but Nia warns him that anger is exactly what their enemies expect. If Caleb loses control, Vance can portray him as a violent outlaw and make the evidence disappear.

Instead, they create a plan to reveal the documents publicly. A large gathering is scheduled in the town square where merchants, ranchers, travelers, and local families will be present. Caleb believes that if enough people hear the evidence at once, Vance will not be able to silence everyone. They ride into town together. The same auction yard where Nia was treated like property is crowded again.

The site brings back the humiliation of the previous day, but this time Nia walks beside Caleb freely. Vance immediately orders Caleb to surrender her. Caleb refuses. The sheriff accuses him of kidnapping, theft, and helping an enemy. Several armed men surround them.
