I thought eventually you'd realize you still loved me. I did love you. She looked up. But love wasn't enough. She nodded.

I know. Then she said something I never expected. I was wrong. I waited. I thought helping Clare was the most important thing in the world.

And now, now I know I was trying to fix someone else's life by destroying my own. I didn't say anything. She continued, "I should have told you. " Yes. I should have listened when you said no. Yes, and I should have understood that being your wife meant making decisions with you.

I looked at her. That was the part you never understood. She wiped her eyes. Do you hate me? No.

She seemed surprised. I don't hate you. Then why can't we try again? I took a breath. Because I don't want the marriage back.

She stared at me. I continued. You keep thinking the punishment was the divorce. It wasn't. The punishment was realizing that the person you thought would always wait for you eventually stopped waiting.

Her eyes filled with tears. I stood up. I hope you're okay, Anna. She looked at me. And I hope you understand why I couldn't stay.

Then I walked out. For years, I had imagined revenge as making someone hurt the way they hurt you. But I finally understood something better. The greatest revenge wasn't destroying Anna. It was building a life she could no longer control.

A year passed after my divorce. I rarely heard from Anna. Clare and Gregory eventually separated for good, and I heard through mutual friends that Clare was raising her daughter with help from her parents. Anna stayed involved with the child, but she no longer lived with Clare. The family that had once seemed so determined to keep everyone together had slowly fallen apart.

I didn't celebrate that. By then, I had stopped thinking about them very much. My company was doing well. I had hired two employees, moved into a better office, and started traveling again. I also started dating.

Nothing serious at first. I wasn't looking for another marriage. I wasn't interested in proving anything to Anna. I simply wanted to enjoy my life without constantly questioning whether the person beside me was telling me the truth. I thought about the man I had been when Anna left for San Diego.

Angry, hurt, convinced my life was over. I had spent six years believing marriage meant holding on no matter what happened. Now I knew better. Marriage required two people who respected each other's choices, even when those choices were difficult. Looking back, I realized I had spent too much time thinking about revenge.

I thought revenge meant making Anna hurt the way she had hurt me. It didn't. The divorce wasn't revenge. The house wasn't revenge. The money wasn't revenge.

Even watching her family fall apart wasn't revenge. The real victory was walking away and building a life that no longer depended on her. Anna had chosen her sister. She had chosen secrecy. She had chosen to believe I'd always be waiting when she came home.

I chose myself. And that was the decision that finally changed my life.
