My blind date sent her mom to reject me, but she said, "Why don't you take me out instead?" The restaurant was quieter than usual that evening. I sat alone at a small table near the window, checking my phone for the tenth time. Her name was Emily.

We had been introduced by a mutual friend, and after a few days of texting, we finally agreed to meet. I arrived 15 minutes early. Ten minutes passed. Then 20.

Finally, a woman in her early 50s approached my table. She looked elegant, confident, and strangely familiar. "Are you Daniel?" she asked. I stood up.

"Yes. And you are?"

She smiled awkwardly. "My name is Linda. I'm Emily's mother."

I froze. Her mother? Linda nodded.

"I'm sorry, Daniel. Emily couldn't bring herself to come."

My heart sank. "Is she okay?"

"She's fine," Linda said. "But she asked me to tell you that she doesn't want to continue with the date." I tried to hide my disappointment. "Oh."

Linda sat down across from me. "She was nervous," she explained. "She thought you might not be her type." I nodded slowly.

"I understand." I was about to leave when Linda suddenly looked at the untouched menu. Then she said something I never expected. "Actually..."

She paused. "Why don't you take me out instead?" For a few seconds, I thought I'd misunderstood her. "I'm sorry, what?"

Linda laughed. "Relax. I'm not asking you to marry me." I smiled nervously.

"I just meant dinner. As two adults."

"But you're Emily's mother."

"I know."

"And Emily sent you here to reject me."

"I know that too." She leaned back in her chair. "That's exactly why I'm curious about you." I didn't know what to say.

Linda explained that Emily had been talking about me for weeks. "She said you were kind, patient, and different from the men she usually met." I raised an eyebrow. "Then why didn't she come?"

Linda sighed. "Because Emily has a habit of running away when something feels real." That sentence stayed with me. I looked at Linda. "Fine. One dinner."

She smiled. "Deal." The waiter brought our food. At first, everything felt awkward.

Linda asked about my work. I asked about her family. Eventually, the conversation became natural. We discovered we both loved old movies, quiet restaurants, and traveling without strict plans.

Then Linda asked something unexpected. "What are you looking for in a relationship?" I thought carefully. "Someone who doesn't pretend."

She smiled. "That's a rare answer."

"What about you?"

Linda looked down at her glass. "I spent most of my life taking care of everyone else." She paused.

"I forgot what it felt like to do something just because I wanted to." For the first time, I saw something behind her confident smile. Loneliness. Not sadness exactly.

Just the loneliness of someone who had spent years putting herself last. The evening passed quickly. When the check arrived, Linda reached for it. I stopped her.

"No. I invited you."

She laughed. "You're taking this seriously."

"Of course."

She looked at me for a moment. Then she said softly, "Thank you, Daniel." Outside the restaurant, Linda stopped before getting into her car.

"There's something you should know."

I waited.

"Emily didn't actually reject you because she didn't like you."

I frowned. "Then why?" Linda sighed.

"She saw your profile and became intimidated."

"Intimidated?"
