Darius stood up, not walking away, just moving because his mind worked better when his body was in motion and his mind was working very hard right now. He went to the window and looked at the city and thought about all of it. The board, the claws. Richard Voss spending 18 months quietly buying his way into a position to dismantle something a woman had spent a decade building. Why me?

He asked. I'm a financial operations analyst. I've been with the company 14 months. On paper, I'm the last person you should be attaching your defense and strategy to. On paper, yes.

So, explain. Off paper. Victoria stood up, too. She came to stand near the window, not beside him, but close enough that he could hear her clearly. And she said something he wasn't expecting.

I've been watched my entire professional life. Every decision I make, every relationship I have, every choice about how I spend my personal time, someone is always analyzing it for weakness, for leverage. She paused. I learned very early to keep my personal life completely separate from everything else. Nobody gets close enough to see the whole picture.

That's been my protection. And the cost of that protection, Darius said, is that now you have nobody who knows the whole picture. Yes, the word was quiet and undecorated. I have advisers. I have colleagues.

I have people who are loyal to my professional success because their own success depends on it. I do not have anyone who is loyal to me. Darius turned from the window. Until now, you're hoping. Until now I'm asking.

She met his eyes steadily. You are not part of my professional ecosystem in a way that creates complications. You are skilled enough to understand what's at stake. You are honest enough that I don't have to calculate what you might do with the information I'm giving you. A pause.

And you are someone who has held an enormously complicated personal situation together with nothing but your own integrity for years. If anyone understands protecting something that matters from people who want to take it, you do. The apartment was very still. Darius thought about Amara. He thought about her school and her stuffed elephant and the way she said daddy when she was sleepy, stretching the word into two full syllables like it was a complete sentence.

If this works, he said, if we do this and the board review is neutralized, what does that look like for you, for your company? Voss loses his mechanism. He still has board position, but without the clause, he has no path to a leadership review. I consolidate the vulnerable board relationships, accelerate two product launches that strengthen our market position, and make it structurally impossible for anyone to attempt this again. She said it with the focused precision of someone who had run this scenario many times in her own mind.
