Visible discoloration.

Victor removed the cover plate.

Then stopped.

“Good thing you called.”

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What?”

Victor pulled the receptacle slightly forward.

One terminal was darkened.

The insulation on a short section of wire had begun to brown.

Susan covered her mouth.

“Was it going to catch fire?”

Victor shook his head.

“Can't say that.”

“But it was overheating?”

“Yes.”

“Repeated sustained load on a receptacle that wasn’t in great condition to begin with.”

He looked at Daniel.

“EV charging pulls power for hours continuously. That's different from plugging in a drill for ten minutes.”

Daniel looked toward Karen’s house.

“So every time she charged here…”

Victor nodded.

“She added heat.”

The answer made Daniel angrier than the utility bill ever had.

Electricity could be reimbursed.

A damaged connection inside a wall was different.

Victor replaced the outlet and inspected the circuit.

Fortunately, damage had remained localized.

No fire inside the wall.

No larger rewiring.

The bill came to several hundred dollars.

Daniel added it to the folder.

Photographs.

Electrician’s report.

Utility data.

Security footage.

HOA acknowledgment.

Now repair costs.

Susan watched him organize everything.

“You’re going back to the association?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want them to do?”

Daniel thought.

“I don't know yet.”

Susan sat across from him.

“You’re angry.”

“Yes.”

“About more than the money.”

“Yes.”

She waited.

Daniel looked at the electrician’s photograph.

“Her own house warned her.”

Susan understood.

“The breaker.”

“She ignored it.”

“Then brought the problem here.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what bothers me.”

It was the same pattern he had seen from the beginning.

Karen encountered a boundary.

Instead of respecting it, she searched for another route.

Her outlet tripped.

Use Daniel’s.

Daniel objected.

Call him unreasonable.

HOA ruled against her.

Return at midnight.

Outlet locked.

Now ask Daniel for help.

Every inconvenience became somebody else’s responsibility.

Chapter 8: Linda’s Outlet

Linda called after hearing about the electrician.

“I think you need to see something.”

Daniel went to her house.

Linda led him around the side.

Her outdoor receptacle looked ordinary.

Then she removed a flowerpot sitting beneath it.

A faint brown streak marked the bottom edge of the cover.

Daniel crouched.

“When did you notice this?”

“Last year.”

“Before Karen got her current SUV?”

“No.”

That mattered.

Karen had owned another plug-in vehicle before the dark crossover.

Linda continued.

“She asked if she could charge here.”

“You said no.”
