Major investor in private-security companies across three states.

Marcus called the federal investigator.

“I have another name.”

“Who?”

“Arthur Vale.”

Silence.

“Are you certain?”

“There’s photographic and corporate linkage.”

“Do not contact him.”

Marcus looked toward Eleanor.

“I wasn't planning to.”

The lights went out.

The underground room fell black.

Eleanor grabbed Marcus’s sleeve.

A metal door slammed somewhere down the corridor.

Footsteps followed.

Then a flashlight.

An elderly man appeared.

Dark suit.

No rush.

No visible fear.

Arthur Vale.

Marcus stood in front of Eleanor.

Arthur smiled.

“Mr. Reed.”

“You know me.”

“I know everyone who enters my problems.”

Marcus looked around.

“Your problems?”

“Bellwood.”

“You consider these people problems?”

“Variables.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You recorded them.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Mrs. Price.”

Her stomach turned.

“You really do know everyone.”

“Information makes unfamiliar people familiar very quickly.”

Marcus said:

“You stole Margaret Bell’s land.”

Arthur shrugged.

“The legal mechanism was inelegant.”

“You falsified documents.”

“Others did.”

“You surveilled residents.”

“We monitored risk.”

“You blackmailed them.”

“We encouraged cooperation.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You have a nicer phrase for everything.”

Arthur smiled.

“That’s what civilization is.”

Marcus’s phone vibrated in his pocket.

He did not reach for it.

Federal agents knew their location.

Arthur continued.

“Thomas never understood the value.”

“What happened to him?”

“Accident.”

Marcus watched his face.

“And Charles Mercer?”

Arthur’s smile faded slightly.

“Different problem.”

“Daniel’s father.”

“Yes.”

“Where is Daniel?”

Arthur looked toward the corridor.

“You'll see.”

Then voices exploded from behind him.

“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!”

Arthur turned.

Agents filled the corridor.

Behind them stood Daniel Cross.

Eleanor stared.

“You're alive.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So far.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You've been working with them?”

“For three weeks.”

“Why disappear?”

“Because Arthur already knew somebody inside security was leaking access data.”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“I needed him to believe I ran.”

Arthur’s expression finally changed.

“You're making your father’s mistake.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“My father’s mistake was trusting people like you to stop voluntarily.”

Agents restrained Arthur.

No gunfight.

No dramatic struggle.

Just an old man discovering that records eventually worked both directions.

Chapter Eight: Thomas Bell

Arthur Vale’s arrest opened records that had remained sealed for decades.

Financial crimes.

Wire fraud.

Extortion.

Conspiracy.

Illegal surveillance.

False property filings.

Not every allegation survived.

Enough did.

Harold Vance turned himself in forty-eight hours later through an attorney.

He had removed the server drive.

He had not destroyed it.

Fear had made him run.

Guilt made him keep the evidence.

Daniel testified.
