I walked into the Amber Room that night only because I needed a drink after a brutal week at work. The lights were low, the jazz was soft, and my eyes swept the room out of habit more than curiosity. That’s when I saw her, my wife, Elena, sitting in a corner booth, laughing at something a stranger said, her hand resting far too casually on his forearm. My chest tightened, my throat went dry, and every rational thought I had dissolved into a single burning question. How long had this been going on, and how had I never noticed?

I told myself to leave. My legs actually turned toward the door, my hand already reaching for my jacket collar. I didn’t want a scene. I didn’t want to hear an explanation I already knew would be a lie. Better to walk out with whatever dignity I had left and figure out the rest tomorrow in a lawyer’s office, with numbers and dates instead of feelings.

I took one step, then two. The exit sign glowed red just ahead of me, and for a moment, I actually believed I could disappear into the night without either of them noticing I’d been there at all. Then I felt her fingers close around my shoulder, firm, certain, not the grip of someone caught, but the grip of someone who had been expecting me. I froze. Elena’s voice, low and steady, cut through the noise of the bar like it was the only sound in the room.

“Don’t leave without seeing how this ends,” she said. No apology, no panic, just quiet control, as if she had rehearsed this exact moment a hundred times in her head. I turned around slowly, bracing myself for excuses, for tears, for anything I could recognize as guilt. What I got instead was her calm, unreadable eyes. “Sit down,” she said, nodding toward the empty seat across from the stranger.

I hesitated, every instinct screaming at me to refuse, but something in her expression made me obey. Up close, the man looked younger than I’d assumed from across the room, maybe mid-30s, wearing a plain gray suit and an expression far too professional for a romantic rendezvous. He didn’t look guilty, either. He looked like he was waiting for a meeting to start. My mind scrambled to make sense of it, searching for a story that fit the picture, but nothing lined up the way betrayal was supposed to.

“This is Daniel,” Elena said, sliding a manila folder across the table toward me. “He’s a private investigator. I hired him three weeks ago.” The words landed like ice water down my spine. My mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Three weeks. I quickly ran the calendar backward in my head, trying to remember what I’d done, where I’d been, and who I’d spoken to during that time. Elena watched my face the entire time, studying me the way a detective studies a suspect, searching for a flicker of guilt she was clearly hoping or dreading to find. “I want you to open it,” she said, tapping the folder with one finger. My hands were shaking, though I told myself it was just the cold air from the door.

I lifted the cover slowly. Inside were photographs, grainy and timestamped, taken from across parking lots and through car windows. My stomach dropped before I even registered the faces. There I was, unmistakably, standing far too close to Priya from the accounting department outside a hotel two Thursdays ago. My alibi that night had been working late.

I remembered lying to Elena over the phone with a confidence that now felt like poison in my throat. “I suspected something for months,” Elena continued, her voice never rising above a whisper, though each word hit harder than a shout. “The late nights, the phone you started locking, the way you flinched whenever it buzzed at dinner. I didn’t want to believe it, so I hired Daniel to prove myself wrong.” She paused, letting the silence stretch painfully long between us.
