The judges began their rounds. There were three of them. Mrs. Blackwood, a local minister known for his love of good food, and a businessman from Cooperville who apparently funded these competitions. They worked methodically, tasting each competitor's dishes, and making notes without revealing their opinions. When they reached Evelyn's station, she stood straight and tried to look confident.

Mrs. Blackwood examined the fried chicken with a critical eye, then took a careful bite. Her expression revealed nothing. The minister tried the cornbread, then immediately took a second piece. The businessman sampled the apple tart, and his eyebrows rose slightly. They made notes and moved on to the final station without comment.

The waiting was agony. Evelyn busied herself cleaning her station, but her eyes kept drifting to the judges as they conferred in low voices at the front of the room. Around her, the other competitors did the same nervous dance of cleaning and watching and trying not to appear anxious. Finally, after what felt like hours, but was probably only 20 minutes, Mrs. Blackwood stood and called for attention. "We have reached our decision," she announced.

"This was a difficult competition with many skilled cooks presenting excellent dishes. However, there can be only one winner." Evelyn's heart was hammering so hard she felt dizzy. "Third place goes to Mrs. Margaret Stone for her exceptional breadwork." Polite applause.

The older woman Evelyn had noticed earlier accepted her white ribbon with grace. "Second place goes to Miss Sarah Mitchell for her ambitious and well-executed crown roast." More applause, slightly louder. Sarah's smile looked forced as she accepted her red ribbon. "And first place, Mrs. Blackwood paused either for drama or because she genuinely needed a moment.

First place goes to Miss Evelyn Harper for a demonstration of fundamental cooking skills elevated to excellence. Her fried chicken showed perfect temperature control and seasoning. Her cornbread demonstrated understanding of both tradition and innovation. And her apple tart was simply the finest dessert we've tasted in years of judging these competitions." The applause that erupted was mixed, some genuine, some reluctant, some confused, but it was there.

Evelyn walked forward on legs that felt like they belonged to someone else and accepted the blue ribbon and the prize money with hands that couldn't stop shaking. "Congratulations, Miss Harper," Mrs. Blackwood said quietly. "You've certainly earned this." From the front row, Lily was bouncing in her seat and clapping so enthusiastically that Ridgewell had to steady her. The ranch hands were whistling and cheering.

Even Thomas was on his feet looking proud and maybe a little shocked. But the best moment came after the official ceremony, when Nathaniel Mitchell approached with Sarah trailing reluctantly behind him. "Miss Harper," he said stiffly, "it appears I owe you an apology, as does my daughter." Sarah looked like she'd rather eat glass, but she managed to force out the words. "I apologize for the things I said about you.

They were untrue and uncharitable." It wasn't sincere. It would probably never be sincere, but it was public and it was witnessed, and that was what mattered. "Apology accepted," Evelyn said simply. After they left, Ridgewell appeared at her elbow.

"How does it feel to be the best cook in three counties?" "Terrifying and wonderful and completely unreal." She looked down at the blue ribbon in her hands. "I can't believe I actually won." "I can."

He smiled at her, that real smile that transformed his whole face. "You were always going to win. You just needed to believe it yourself." Lily crashed into Evelyn with enough force to nearly knock her over, wrapping small arms around her waist. "You were amazing.
