“She objected.”

“I’m shocked.”

Howard almost laughed.

“There’s one more thing.”

He emailed a file.

DEPLOYMENT PROPERTY CONTROL CHECKLIST

Karen created it five days after Owen left.

The checklist included:

Exterior inspection.

Vehicle verification.

Mailbox monitoring.

Guest observation.

Utility-access confirmation.

And finally:

OCCUPANCY STABILIZATION IF UNAUTHORIZED RESIDENTS REMAIN

Sarah stared at the phrase.

No governing document defined it.

No board vote authorized it.

Karen’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Howard said:

“We’re asking counsel whether any of this was legal under our documents.”

Sarah answered:

“It wasn’t.”

For the first time, Howard did not hedge.

“I know.”

That weekend was quiet.

Sarah and Linda tried to treat the silence as normal.

Groceries.

Dinner with Caleb.

A pie Linda insisted she was healthy enough to bake.

A Sunday video call with Owen in which nobody said Karen’s name for nearly twenty minutes.

Then Owen gave them unexpected news.

“There’s a chance I may get home early.”

Sarah sat up.

“How early?”

“Maybe a couple weeks. Nothing is final.”

Linda smiled.

“Are you trying to surprise us badly?”

“I’m telling you because Sarah hates surprises.”

“Correct.”

Three days later Owen received confirmation.

He could return on a flight landing Thursday morning.

Almost two and a half weeks earlier than expected.

He did not update the HOA.

There was no reason to.

His deployment paperwork had been informational.

Not a request for permission.

He told Sarah only that his schedule was moving around.

He wanted to walk through the front door and see her reaction.

Meanwhile, Karen went silent.

Sarah should have felt relieved.

Instead, she became suspicious.

Tuesday, Miguel called.

“I think you should know Karen asked another contractor about residential lock hardware.”

Sarah stopped what she was doing.

“For this house?”

“She didn’t give the address around me. She said she needed a temporary compliance lock for an occupancy hold.”

“What is an occupancy hold?”

“I don’t know.”

Sarah immediately emailed Howard and Denise.

Howard answered:

Karen does not have board authorization to alter any lock or access point at your property. I am contacting her now.

Denise wrote:

Management has issued no lock work order.

Sarah saved both messages.

Karen did not appear Tuesday.

Or Wednesday.

By Wednesday evening, Sarah thought the warning had worked.

At 7:40 Thursday morning, Linda called from the front room.

“Sarah?”

Something in her voice brought Sarah downstairs immediately.

Karen stood outside.

She was not alone.

A contractor waited near the porch carrying a case of lock hardware.

Another man stood beside the rear gate.

Karen held a red notice.
