Malcolm asked quietly, “Do you mean since the day you asked whether I belonged in this class?” Several students shifted in their seats.
Dempsey told him he was twisting the conversation. Malcolm answered that he had spent eight months being asked to prove things other students were allowed to simply know.
Dempsey pointed toward Malcolm’s seat. “Sit down.”
Malcolm shook his head. “Not until I get my project.”
He knelt beside the trash can. Dempsey stood over him while Malcolm reached inside.
The first thing he retrieved was Jupiter, detached from its arm. Then came a bent section of copper tubing and half of Saturn’s ring.
Finally, Malcolm pulled out a torn piece of the star-covered base. One edge had ripped completely away when the frame hit the bin.
His hands started shaking. He hated that Dempsey could probably see it.
Then another hand appeared beside him. Ethan had walked forward.
He picked up a separate broken section of the star field. Dempsey ordered him back to his seat.
Ethan ignored the instruction long enough to examine the damage. Then he returned to his lab table carrying the torn piece.
He took out his phone. Malcolm barely noticed.
Ethan opened Northgate’s Student Council portal and selected the Academic Climate Committee page. He attached the video another student had begun recording before Dempsey touched the model, photographed the broken piece in his hand, and typed a short description.
Teacher destroyed student capstone during presentation after repeated authorship accusations. Prior documented concerns involving same student. Witnesses: entire period.
He pressed send. The submission immediately copied Ms. Patel, Assistant Principal Mason, and the student council president.
Dempsey saw the phone. “Put that away.”
Ethan looked up. “I’m filing an incident report.”
Dempsey stopped.
For the first time since Malcolm’s presentation began, the teacher’s expression changed from anger to uncertainty. His eyes moved from Ethan’s screen to the students around the room.
Several phones were already out. Caleb had recorded almost the entire confrontation.
Dempsey told everyone to put devices away. Nobody argued, but the evidence already existed.
Malcolm continued retrieving the model. He did not speak again.
At 10:14, Assistant Principal Mason entered Room 212 with Ms. Patel. They had received Ethan’s report eight minutes earlier.
