“I know.”

“That is too long.”

Jasmine laughed.

The incident lasted less than thirty seconds.

She almost forgot it.

Then Connor began appearing more often.

Not dramatically.

A comment in the hallway.

A joke during lunch.

One afternoon he saw Jasmine leaving AP Government and asked whether the class needed “representation points.”

Another time, when she answered a question during a senior meeting, he muttered loudly enough for friends to hear, “Here comes CNN.”

His friends laughed.

Jasmine ignored that one.

Then he commented on her hair.

She had worn braids for most of September.

In October she arrived with her natural hair pulled into a high puff.

Connor looked at her in the cafeteria.

“New character unlocked.”

Jasmine kept walking.

He followed.

“You change hair every week?”

“No.”

“How does that even work?”

She stopped.

“Why are you asking?”

“Curious.”

“You own Google.”

His friends laughed.

Connor’s expression changed.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

Enough for Jasmine.

He disliked being made ridiculous in front of other people.

That pattern would matter later.

Jasmine met Walter Bennett at a coffee shop on a Sunday afternoon.

He arrived fifteen minutes early wearing khaki pants, a blue windbreaker, and hearing aids connected to his phone. He carried a thin brown envelope.

Renee came with Jasmine.

Walter recognized her immediately.

“You have Elijah’s eyes.”

Renee smiled cautiously.

“People used to say that.”

Walter looked toward Jasmine.

“She has his patience.”

Jasmine laughed.

“You’ve known me thirty seconds.”

“I have email evidence.”

That relaxed everyone.

Then Walter placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was another copy of the cafeteria photograph.

A handwritten witness statement.

And a disciplinary report.

The report was dated March 14, 1974.

Student:

Elijah Cole, 17.

Violation:

Physical assault / cafeteria disruption / insubordination.

Recommended discipline:

Ten school days suspension.

A handwritten note reduced another student’s punishment to two days.

That student:

Michael Whitmore.

Jasmine stared.

Whitmore.

Walter watched recognition arrive.

“Yes.”

Renee leaned forward.

“Connor Whitmore’s family?”

“I assume the boy at your school is related.”

Jasmine looked at the photograph.

The white teenager behind Elijah.

Large.

Dark hair.

Same square jaw.

“Michael was Connor’s grandfather.”

Walter nodded slowly.

“I figured.”

Renee looked uncomfortable.

“What actually happened?”

Walter became quiet.

He was seventeen too when the photograph was taken.

He had been helping a teacher move boxes near the cafeteria entrance.

Elijah sat eating with three friends.

Michael Whitmore and two boys from the football team approached.

Walter did not hear the beginning.

He heard laughing.

Then Michael said something about Elijah sitting “where people could smell him.”

Renee’s face changed.

Walter continued.

Michael picked up part of Elijah’s meal.

Elijah told him to stop.

Michael placed one hand behind Elijah’s neck.

Then pushed his face into the tray.

Exactly what the photograph showed.

“What did my father do?”

Renee asked.

Walter looked at her.

“He got up.”

Elijah punched Michael.
