The elevator doors opened. Clare stepped inside. The doors closed. Andre remained still until the floor numbers above the elevator began to rise. Then he collected his bag and walked outside.

His bicycle was exactly where he had left it. The little metal clip from his repair kit was gone now, holding together the shoe of a woman who probably had replacements worth more than his entire suit. Andre almost laughed at the absurdity of it. He unlocked the bike and looked once more at the tower. He had done exactly what he would have wanted someone to do for Leah.

That should have made the decision feel right. Instead, as he started the long ride back to Benton Avenue, all he could think about was how expensive doing the right thing had just become. Clare Mercer, meanwhile, reached the executive floor and discovered that she could not stop thinking about the man who had knelt beside her on the sidewalk. Her first meeting began 5 minutes after she arrived, and she caught herself twice looking at the repaired strap on her shoe. Afterward, she asked her assistant, Evelyn Parker, whether a late candidate had been turned away that morning.

Evelyn checked the visitor log. Andre Lawson, operations coordinator interview, scheduled for 8:45, arrived at 8:58. Clare looked up. He was turned away. Yes.

Who handled it? Rachel Bennett. Clare asked Rachel to come upstairs. When Rachel arrived, Clare asked only one question at first. Did he explain why he was late?

Rachel nodded. He said he stopped to help a woman outside. Broken heel, dead phone, difficulty crossing the street. Clare looked down at the repaired shoe. Rachel followed her eyes and realization changed her face.

"That was you?" "Yes." Rachel immediately said, "I can call him back." Clare shook her head. "Not yet."

Rachel looked confused. Clare understood why. The obvious response was to reverse the rejection and reward Andre. But Clare had spent too much of her adult life around people who knew who she was before deciding how kind to be. Board members remembered birthdays they did not care about.

Vendors laughed at jokes that were not funny. Strangers became unusually helpful the moment someone whispered her title. Andre had not known her name. He had been 11 minutes from an interview that clearly mattered to him and he had stopped anyway. Clare did not want to turn that into a transaction.

Help the chief executive officer receive employment. That would cheapen the very thing that had impressed her. I want to know whether we missed something in his application, she said. Evelyn and Rachel reopened Andre's file. His resume was ordinary enough at first glance.

Community college credential in logistics, several years of operations work, no prestigious title, no famous employer. But attached near the end of the application was a short portfolio labeled process improvement examples. Rachel admitted she had not reviewed it closely because the first screening had focused on experience requirements. Clare opened the first example. Andre described a staffing adjustment that had reduced overtime by about 18%.
