Thomas wondered how hungry a mother had to be before stealing became easier than watching her children suffer. Mara seemed ready for punishment. She stood quietly, accepting whatever fate Thomas decided to give her. Thomas finally lowered the rifle completely. Mara looked up, surprised by the sudden change in his expression.

He told her to wait where she was. Then he turned toward the storehouse. Mara watched every step, uncertain whether he intended to return with a rope or call for help. Thomas opened the wooden door and stared at the shelves inside. There was enough food to last him for weeks.

He remembered the two children hiding outside and felt ashamed that he had been thinking only about what had been taken. He gathered another sack and began filling it with flour, beans, dried meat, cornmeal, and whatever else he believed the children could eat. When Thomas returned, Mara stared at the larger sack in disbelief. He placed it beside the first one and added two canteens of fresh water. He told her that she should take the food and feed her children.

Mara remained silent, tears slowly gathering in her eyes. Thomas then looked toward the children and told her they did not have to hide anymore. He had an old cabin on the far side of the ranch that had been empty for years. She and her children could rest there while they figured out what to do next. Mara looked at Thomas as though she had never expected mercy from a stranger.

That afternoon, Thomas realized that the woman he had caught stealing might not be a thief at all. She was simply a mother who had reached the end of her strength. Thomas carried the food toward Mara and placed the heavy sack gently on the ground. Inside were flour, beans, dried meat, cornmeal, and enough supplies to keep her children fed for several days. He also handed her a full canteen of fresh water.

Mara stared at him in disbelief, unable to understand why the man who had caught her stealing was now giving her more than she had dared to take. Thomas told her that no mother should have to watch her children starve. Mara lowered her head, fighting back tears, and finally explained that her small camp had been scattered after violence swept through the region. She had spent days wandering with her children, searching for water and food. Thomas listened without interrupting.

He could see that Mara was exhausted from more than hunger. She carried the weight of fear, loss, and responsibility on her shoulders. When she finished, Thomas looked toward the two children and told Mara about the old cabin on the far side of his ranch. It had once belonged to a hired ranch hand, but it had been empty for years. The roof still held, and there was a small fireplace inside.

Thomas offered it to Mara and her children until they were strong enough to decide where they wanted to go. Mara hesitated, afraid that accepting his kindness might come with a hidden price. Thomas simply told her she owed him nothing. That evening, Mara and her children settled inside the old cabin. Thomas left extra blankets, water, and food outside the door before returning to his own house.
