Caleb refuses to back down. He pays for their release using nearly all the money he had earned from selling his horse. The four women follow him because they have nowhere else to go, but none of them trusts him yet. As they leave town, Elena notices that Caleb keeps a respectful distance and never treats them like possessions. The five riders disappear toward Caleb's ranch.

Behind them, Boone watches with anger. Ahead of them, the ranch looks almost abandoned with broken fences, empty feed bins, and a dry well. Caleb realizes he may have taken on more than he can handle, but he also knows turning away would have been worse. As darkness settles, Caleb tells the women that they will have separate sleeping quarters and that no one will force them to stay. The promise matters because protection had often come with hidden demands.

The four women agree to judge him by his actions, not by rumors. The morning after arriving at Caleb's ranch, the four women wake before sunrise and discover how badly the property has suffered. The drought has cracked the fields. The main water trough is nearly empty. Several cattle are weak, and one side of the barn roof has collapsed.

Caleb apologizes for the poor conditions, explaining that his father once kept the ranch prosperous, but years of drought and debt slowly destroyed everything. He expects the women to rest while he handles the work, but Naya immediately offers to help with the water. Elena begins inspecting the damaged fences, while Mara studies the cattle carefully. Sela quietly starts organizing the kitchen and repairing torn blankets. Caleb is surprised by their willingness to work.

He had expected frightened strangers who needed protection, but each woman brings practical knowledge and determination. Naya understands how to conserve water. Elena knows how to handle frightened horses. Mara recognizes signs of illness among the cattle. Sela is observant and remembers where every tool and supply is stored.

Their different abilities quickly make the ranch more organized. During breakfast, Caleb tells them they are free to leave whenever they find a safer place. None of them has to repay him for the shelter. This surprises the women because every offer of protection they experienced before had eventually carried a price. Naya tells Caleb that trust cannot be demanded and that they will judge him by what he does next.

As the days pass, the ranch begins changing. Caleb and Elena repair the northern fence together. Mara discovers that several cattle are drinking from contaminated water and warns Caleb that more animals could become sick. Naya helps him locate an old water channel behind the property. Sela finds several useful books and records belonging to Caleb's father and begins organizing them.

Caleb slowly learns more about the women's pasts. Naya was rejected after years of marriage because she had not become a mother. Elena had suffered a pregnancy loss and was cruelly blamed for it. Mara had been treated as though her only purpose was to provide an heir. Sela was abandoned before marriage after relatives decided she would never satisfy the expectations placed upon her.

Caleb never tells them to forget their past. Instead, he treats their experiences with respect and refuses to define them by what happened. Their growing cooperation attracts attention in town. Silas Boone hears that Caleb's ranch has four Apache women living there and begins spreading rumors that they are dangerous. Boone also reminds Caleb that carries debt and could soon be taken if payment is not made.
