Desmond said the plans had changed. When she asked whether it was with Celeste, he gave her a look. Tessa returned to the robot and told him he made a strange face whenever Celeste was involved. Desmond denied it. Tessa said nothing more.

Long after she went to bed, Desmond remained at the table with the garage estimate in front of him. For the first time, he wondered whether walking away had protected his dignity or protected him from finding out how much he had already started to care. 3 weeks passed, and the distance between Desmond and Celeste became something neither of them discussed with anyone else. Celeste did not call him late at night, send gifts pressure Victor, or use what she knew about Desmond's financial strain as an excuse to offer money again. For most of her adult life, when something went wrong, she solved it.

She negotiated, organized, scheduled, paid, reassigned, or replaced. Action made uncertainty easier to tolerate. Desmond had left her with something she could not manage into submission, so she did the one thing she had rarely allowed herself to do. She let the discomfort remain. At the next Rowan Foundation meeting, Lawrence mentioned Graham again.

This time, Celeste did not redirect him with a joke. She told her uncle she had meant what she said and wanted no more introductions. Lawrence explained that he had only been trying to help. Celeste told him she knew. When he asked whether this was about the electrician, she did not correct the label.

It's about me deciding who belongs in my private life. Lawrence closed the folder in front of him and said that was fair. It was not a dramatic victory. He did not suddenly understand everything she had tried to explain for years, but he stopped arguing and that mattered. Celeste began changing other habits, too.

In meetings, she asked questions before giving answers. When a project manager brought her a problem, she resisted solving it in the first 30 seconds. When someone warned that a decision might create discomfort, she stopped treating discomfort itself as evidence that something needed to be fixed. She was beginning to understand that not every difficult feeling required a transaction. Desmond was learning something less comfortable.

He kept the truck running for another week, then finally paid for the repair himself by taking money from the savings he had set aside for supervisory training. The truck came back running better. The training fund did not recover nearly as quickly. Victor noticed. They were standing inside a half-finished office renovation when Victor handed Desmond a set of marked drawings and told him that if he missed another enrollment window, Victor might fill out the training application himself.

Desmond said that would be fraud. Victor said he was willing to take the risk. Desmond promised he would enroll. Victor reminded him that he had made the same promise before. Then Victor leaned against the temporary wall and said, "You know what your problem is?

You think because you can carry something, you're supposed to carry it alone. " Desmond looked at him. Victor added, "I'm not talking about money. " Desmond's expression ended the conversation, but it did not erase the words. At home, Tessa noticed more than he wanted her to. One evening, she sat at the kitchen table rebuilding the arm on her robot while Desmond sorted receipts nearby. After several quiet minutes, she asked whether he was still angry with Celeste.

Desmond asked who said he was angry. Tessa pointed out that he had not said Celeste's name in 3 weeks. He argued that he did not say many people's names. Tessa reminded him he had said Victor's name the day before. Desmond claimed that was because Victor talked too much.
