The laughter had hidden that. So had the loose sweatshirt. So had Jordan's habit of making himself smaller in crowded rooms. But now he stood completely upright. Tyler's smile weakened.

Chase noticed. So did Logan. Jordan looked first at the ruined recommendation, then at Tyler. His voice came low and clear. Enough.

No one laughed. Tyler glanced toward Chase. Chase gave him a tiny smile, the kind that said the crowd was watching now. Finish it. Tyler turned back to Jordan.

What are you going to do? Jordan's right hand lowered beside his pocket. For one brief second, his fingers touched the scratched brass key through the fabric. A reminder of another place, another version of strength. Jordan withdrew his hand, empty, open.

He looked at Tyler. I'm going to pick up my work. Tyler stepped onto one of the remaining pages. Jordan's eyes dropped to the shoe, then rose again. Move your foot.

The terrace had gone completely still. Dozens of people were watching now. Donors, students, administrators, Emily, Logan's camera. Even Richard Whitmore had turned toward the doors. Tyler leaned forward.

His voice was barely above a whisper. Make me. Jordan did not move. That seemed to disappoint him. So Tyler kicked the wet recommendation farther into the rain.

Jordan watched it slide across the stone. Then he stood very still and in that silence something changed. Not in Jordan, in the room around him. For the first time the people watching could no longer pretend this was a joke. And for the first time, Tyler Bennett seemed determined to find out exactly how much humiliation one quiet man would take.

Rain tapped against the stone terrace beyond the awning. Jordan Carter stood in front of Tyler with his hands open at his sides. His capstone pages lay scattered around them. One sheet was trapped beneath Tyler's shoe. The internship recommendation Jordan had worked years to earn was darkening in the rain.

Nobody moved. Jordan looked at Tyler. Don't touch me again. He did not raise his voice. That made the words carry farther.

Even the donors near the glass doors heard them. Tyler's mouth curled. What? Jordan repeated himself. Don't touch me again.

Behind Tyler, Chase Whitmore smiled. Not because the situation was funny anymore, because he thought he had finally found the line Jordan would not cross quietly. Logan Price stepped closer with his phone. The camera stayed pointed at Jordan. Emily Collins stood near the stone column with one hand gripping her camera bag.

Her heart hammered as she watched the space between the two men shrink. She wanted to speak. She should have spoken days ago, but the terrace was full of people with more money, more influence, and more confidence than she had. So she froze again. Tyler glanced at Chase.

That tiny glance told Jordan everything. This was not anger. It was performance. Tyler wanted an audience. Chase wanted a reaction.

Logan wanted footage. Jordan slowly bent to reach for another page. Tyler shoved him. It wasn't enough to knock Jordan down, but it was deliberate. A few people gasped.

Jordan straightened. His face remained calm. Inside, something old had begun to wake. Not rage, memory. The smell of wrestling mats.

Coach Brooks's voice. Weight through the hips. Watch the shoulders. Never fight force with panic. Jordan took one step backward.

I'm leaving. That should have ended it. Tyler laughed. You've been leaving all week. Jordan reached toward his portfolio.

Tyler moved first. His fist came forward fast, but not fast enough. Jordan saw the shoulder turn before the punch fully started. His body reacted before thought. He shifted half a step to the outside.

Tyler's fist passed where Jordan's face had been. Jordan caught the attacking arm, guided the momentum forward, and turned his hips. There was no wild motion, no swing, no retaliation. Tyler simply lost his balance. One second he was standing, the next he was controlled against the wet stone with Jordan holding his arm safely behind him.

The terrace exploded in startled voices. Oh my god, what just happened? Logan's phone jerked downward. Chase stared. Tyler struggled.

Jordan loosened pressure rather than increasing it. Stop moving. Tyler twisted harder. Jordan adjusted his grip. Nothing dramatic, just control.

Tyler stopped. Then Chase charged from behind. Emily saw it. Jordan. Jordan heard her.

He also felt the shift in the crowd. He released Tyler and turned. Chase reached for his shoulders. Jordan stepped across his path, caught the upper arm, and used Chase's own momentum to guide him down. Chase hit the terrace on his back with a shocked breath.

Not injured, just stunned. Jordan immediately stepped away. Two attackers down. No punch thrown. Logan stared at his phone.

For perhaps the first time in his life, he forgot he was filming. Then Pride made the decision for him. He shoved the phone into his pocket and grabbed Jordan's wrist. Jordan looked down. Logan realized his mistake too late.

Jordan rotated his arm free, caught Logan's wrist without twisting it violently, and guided him toward the ground. Logan dropped to one knee. Hey. Jordan held him there, not hurting him, preventing him from moving. The entire sequence had taken seconds.

10, perhaps fewer. Rain hissed beyond the awning. Tyler lay on one side, staring at Jordan as though he were seeing a different man. Chase sat up slowly. Logan's breathing came fast.

Jordan's breathing did not. Let me go, Logan said. Jordan looked at him. Are you done? Yes.

Jordan released him instantly. Logan pulled his hand to his chest. Tyler pushed himself backward. Okay, he said. Okay, we're done.

The words came too loudly, too quickly. The same man who had spent days trying to make Jordan look frightened was suddenly afraid Jordan might come closer. Jordan did not. Chase got to one knee. Get off me.

Jordan wasn't touching him. That seemed to humiliate Chase even more. Jordan stepped backward. Both hands rose where everyone could see them. Open palms.
