The sky turned black long before the rain came. Not night black, something heavier, like the world itself had taken a breath and refused to let it go. Clara Whitaker stood at the fence line, her fingers wrapped tight around the rough wood, watching the horizon twist into something ugly. The cattle were restless, heads low, hooves shifting. They knew before she did.

They always did. She stayed. The first drop struck her cheek hard, cold, then another. Then the sky broke open. Rain slammed down like thrown gravel.

Wind ripped across the land, bending grass flat against the earth. Thunder cracked so close it shook the bones inside her ribs. "Move! " she shouted, her voice swallowed whole. She swung the rope, driving the cattle toward the small corral beside the barn. Mud rose fast under her boots, thick and greedy, pulling at every step.

The animals scattered instead of gathering, panic breaking them apart. Lightning split the sky again. One steer bolted, then another. Clara stopped. For a second too long, this was it.

Everything slipping through her hands. the ranch, the cattle, the last pieces of a life that refused to hold together. Rain soaked through her dress, clinging tight to her skin. Her hair plastered across her face. She wiped it away and forced herself forward, but the fight was already lost. She turned toward the barn.

One step, then another, and that's when she saw it. Something dark against the fence, not moving. At first, she thought it was a dead calf. Just one more thing the storm had taken. But the shape was wrong.

Too long, too still. Her breath slowed. The wind howled around her, but something inside went quiet. She stepped closer. Mud sucked at her boots.

Closer. The shape shifted barely. A man, face down in the mud. One arm stretched out like he had tried to reach something. and failed. Clara stopped a few feet away.

Her chest tightened. Out here, a man in the dirt during a storm like this only meant one thing. Trouble. The kind that didn't knock. The kind that stayed, her hand curled into a fist.

She looked back toward the cabin. Warmth, fire, safety. No one would blame her for walking away. No one would even know. The rain hit harder.

She took a step back. Then she saw it. Dark liquid mixing with the mud. Too thick, too slow. Blood.

Her jaw tightened. The storm roared louder like it was waiting for her to choose. She moved forward. Slow, careful. She nudged his shoulder with her boot.

Nothing. Then a sound, low, rough, pulled from somewhere deep inside him. He was alive. Clara shut her eyes for a brief second. That was all it took.

When she opened them again, she was already kneeling. Her hands grabbed his shirt. Heavy dead weight. She pulled nothing. Her boots slipped.

She planted her feet again, teeth clenched and dragged him inch by inch away from the fence. His body carved two deep lines through the mud behind him. "Damn you," she muttered, breath shaking. Rain hammered her back. Her arms burned.

But she didn't stop. The barn stood across the yard, blurred behind sheets of water. Too far, always too far. Twice she fell. Face first into the mud.

Cold filled her mouth. She pushed herself up both times. Kept dragging. By the time she crossed the barn threshold, her strength was gone. She dropped beside him, chest rising hard, visions spinning.

The rain drumed on the roof above them. Loud, endless. She stayed there for a moment, just breathing. Then she forced herself up. The lantern flickered to life with shaking hands.

Light spilled across the man's face. Young, younger than she expected, dark hair stuck to his forehead, jaw rough with stubble. and his eyes. They opened, gray, sharp, watching her like something cornered. Clara didn't step back. She found the wound high on his ribs.
