When the verdict was read, the courtroom held its breath. "On the count of aggravated assault under color of law, guilty. On the count of deprivation of rights under color of law, guilty. On the count of witness tampering, guilty. On the count of perjury, guilty."

The foreperson read through 14 separate charges. 14 times the word guilty struck Dempsey like a physical blow. He didn't cry. He was entirely hollowed out, staring blankly ahead as the reality of his new life finally settled over him like a concrete shroud. Judge William Carter, a stern federal judge with zero tolerance for police corruption, did not delay sentencing.

He looked down from the bench, his expression entirely devoid of pity. "Ricardo Dempsey, you were given the sacred trust of protecting the public." Judge Carter said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Instead, you operated as a predator. You used the authority of the state to brutalize the vulnerable, to ruin innocent lives, and to feed your own grotesque ego.

You struck a colleague of mine, not because she was a threat, but because you thought she was a citizen who couldn't defend herself. It is the judgment of this court that you serve a total of 240 months, 20 years, in a maximum security federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole." A collective gasp of relief and vindication swept through the gallery. Tonya Richards squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear of pure relief tracking down her cheek. Clarence Washington hugged his wife tightly.

"Bailiff, remand the prisoner into custody." Judge Carter ordered, slamming his gavel. Two massive federal marshals approached the defense table. They grabbed Dempsey by his arms, hauling him to his feet.

One of the marshals unhooked a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Hands behind your back, Dempsey." The marshal commanded. Dempsey slowly turned around.

As the cold steel ratcheted tightly around his wrists, the exact same sound he had used to terrorize thousands of people, He looked up into the gallery. He made eye contact with Tonya Richards. She wasn't shrinking away. She was standing tall, looking at him with a mixture of pity and absolute triumph.

Richard Dempsey was led out of the courtroom, shuffling in his cheap suit, completely stripped of his dignity, his power, and his freedom. He was no longer a cop. He was no longer a fixer. He was just an inmate walking into the dark, unforgiving abyss of the justice system he had so deeply abused, completely destroyed by the karma he had spent 15 years begging for.
