Because it wasn't the electricity that overwhelmed him. It was the realization that he had never truly been alone. Two days later, Caleb sat across from the family services coordinator at a folding table inside the county office. This time, he came prepared. Repair documents, inspection reports, payment records, photographs.

Everything organized neatly in a folder. Sandra Howell reviewed each document carefully. Caleb answered every question honestly. He didn't make excuses. He didn't exaggerate.

He simply told the truth. The house had problems. The problems were fixed. His daughter had always been safe. His daughter would always be safe.

When Sandra finished reviewing the paperwork, she looked at him for a long moment. Then she signed the reassessment approval. Just like that, the cloud hanging over his life began to lift. The custody concerns were removed. The home was cleared.

The weekend visit was reinstated. Caleb thanked her quietly and walked outside into the afternoon sunlight. Miriam was waiting near the parking lot. "Well?" She asked.

Caleb held up the paperwork. For the first time in weeks, a genuine smile crossed his face. Miriam smiled, too. Neither celebrated. Neither shouted.

Some victories are too meaningful for noise. Saturday morning arrived bright and clear. Caleb stood on the newly repaired porch long before the car appeared. He had barely slept the night before. Not from anxiety this time.

From anticipation. Then finally, he saw it. A vehicle turning onto the gravel road. His heart immediately began pounding. The car rolled closer.

Slower. Closer. Then it stopped. The passenger door flew open. Lily jumped out before the engine was even off.

"Daddy!" She screamed. Caleb barely had time to open his arms before she crashed into him. He caught her and lifted her off the ground as she wrapped herself around his neck. For several seconds, neither spoke.

Caleb simply held her. Breathing in the familiar scent of her shampoo. Feeling the warmth of her small arms. Listening to her laugh. Every fear.

Every sleepless night. Every moment of doubt suddenly felt distant. Lily finally pulled back and looked at him. "You fixed it." Caleb blinked.
