The moment the beautiful CEO walked into her grandfather's Christmas mansion with a single father on her arm, everyone at the dinner table went silent. Her family had expected her to arrive alone, just as she had every Christmas for the last six years. Instead, she stepped through the grand wooden doors in a stunning red dress, holding the arm of a handsome man in a navy suit as if he belonged beside her. But what nobody knew was that the man beside her wasn't her boyfriend. He was a struggling single dad hired to pretend to be the love of her life for one Christmas night.

And the moment her grandfather looked at him, he laughed warmly and said, "How lucky." His name was Gideon Mercer, a 38-year-old single father who had learned to measure life in grocery receipts, school schedules, and the number of hours he could work without missing bedtime with his 8-year-old daughter, Mara. Gideon had once dreamed of owning his own construction company, but after his wife passed away unexpectedly 3 years earlier, dreams had become luxuries he could no longer afford. He worked wherever someone needed strong hands, repairing fences, unloading deliveries, fixing broken doors, and sometimes taking overnight maintenance jobs just to make sure Mara never went to bed wondering whether there would be enough food in the refrigerator the next morning.

He never complained about his life. Whenever Mara asked why they lived in a small apartment above an old bakery, he simply smiled and told her that home was wherever they were together. Across the city lived Celeste Hawthorne, the 35-year-old CEO of one of the region's most successful luxury companies. To the outside world, Celeste had everything. She had wealth, influence, an elegant penthouse, expensive cars, and a reputation for being impossible to intimidate.

But Christmas was the one time of year when all of her success felt meaningless. Every year, her grandfather, Augustus Hawthorne, gathered the entire family at his mountain estate for Christmas dinner. Augustus was 82, cheerful, sharp-minded, and stubbornly determined to see his granddaughter happy. For years, Celeste had arrived alone.

And every year, her relatives asked the same uncomfortable questions about marriage, relationships, and why a woman who could run an entire company could never seem to find someone to share her life with. This year, Celeste had finally reached her limit. Her younger cousin was engaged, her aunt had already arranged another matchmaking attempt, and her uncle had openly joked that Celeste would probably marry her business calendar. She didn't want another evening of forced smiles and painful questions. So, 2 days before Christmas, she made an unusual decision.

She needed a fake boyfriend, someone kind enough to understand the arrangement and confident enough to survive her intimidating family. Through a community charity connected to her company, she heard about Gideon. She learned that he had been volunteering on weekends repairing homes for elderly residents, even though he could barely afford his own rent. That detail caught her attention.

When Celeste finally approached him, Gideon initially thought the entire situation was ridiculous. A billionaire CEO wanted him to pretend to be her boyfriend at Christmas dinner. He almost walked away. But then Celeste explained that she would pay him enough to cover several months of rent, and Gideon remembered the overdue notice sitting on his kitchen counter. More importantly, she promised there would be no humiliation, no tricks, and no expectations beyond one evening.

Gideon reluctantly agreed, but he made one condition. His daughter, Mara, had to come with him because he never left her alone for an entire night. Celeste surprised him by immediately agreeing. On Christmas Eve, Gideon stood outside the Hawthorne estate wearing a perfectly fitted navy suit that Celeste had arranged for him. He felt uncomfortable in clothing that probably cost more than his car.

Beside him, Mara wore a beautiful burgundy Christmas dress and held a small silver gift wrapped in paper she had decorated herself. Celeste stepped out of the mansion wearing a breathtaking red gown, her blonde hair falling softly over her shoulders. For a moment, Gideon forgot that they were pretending. She looked less like the cold CEO he knew from newspaper articles and more like a woman who was desperately hoping someone would tell her she was enough. Inside, the mansion glowed with Christmas lights.

A towering tree stood beside the fireplace covered with golden ornaments. Candles flickered across the long dining table and through the enormous windows, snow-covered mountains outside. But the warmth of the decorations couldn't hide the tension when Celeste entered with Gideon. Her relatives stared. One aunt nearly dropped her glass.
