Victoria Hayes had bought silence before. She had bought loyalty votes companies, even men who smiled while betraying her. But at 1:17 a.m., inside a frozen private hangar in Silver Pines, Colorado, the billionaire CEO discovered there was one thing her money could not buy a working airplane. Her $70 million jet sat dead on the runway warning lights bleeding red across the cockpit glass while a blizzard swallowed the mountains outside. In less than 7 hours, Victoria had to reach Seattle and sign the deal that would save Hayes Meridian Aviation from a hostile takeover.

If she missed the deadline, her own COO, Derek Lawson, would seize control of the company her father had built. Then the mechanic arrived. Caleb Walker stepped out of the snow in worn boots, a torn jacket, and oil stains under his fingernails, looking nothing like the kind of man Victoria allowed near her aircraft. She almost laughed when the airport manager said he was the only one left who could fix it. Caleb ignored her glare, opened the engine panel, and went still.

"This plane didn't fail," he said. "Someone wanted it grounded. " Victoria's blood ran cold, but her pride spoke first. Fix it, she snapped. Do it before dawn and I'll give you anything you want. Money, a job, a house, name it.

The hangar fell silent except for the wind hammering the steel doors. Caleb looked down at his phone. On the cracked screen was a photo of a small boy asleep beside a blue toy airplane, his hand curled around it like a prayer. When Caleb looked back up, his voice was rough, quiet, and unbearable. My six-year-old son needs a mother.

Victoria froze. Her attorney stared. Even the pilot stopped breathing. For one sharp second, Victoria thought he was mocking her, reducing her power to some desperate fantasy. Her eyes hardened.

I am not for sale. Caleb did not flinch. Neither was my wife, he said. Cancer took her anyway. And every night my son asks when mommy is coming home.

Then from deep inside the jet, a hidden alarm suddenly screamed. Caleb turned pale, ripped open another panel, and whispered the words that changed everything. Whoever sabotaged this plane didn't just want you late. They wanted you dead. Now Victoria had to trust the poor single dad she had insulted or lose her company and her life tonight forever.

The scream from the jet's hidden alarm tore through the hangar. Victoria stepped back so fast her heels struck a toolbox, but Caleb was moving, yanking a flashlight from his belt and ripping open the lower avionics panel beneath the fuselage. Red light pulsed across his face, turning the oil on his cheekbone into something that looked like blood. "Shut that thing off," Victoria ordered. But her voice no longer had the steel it had carried minutes earlier.

I can't, Caleb said, sliding onto his back beneath the aircraft. It's not a normal warning. It's a tamper cascade. Mara Collins. Victoria's attorney clutched her tablet.

What does that mean? Caleb reached into the exposed wiring. Somebody touched a system they weren't supposed to touch, then buried a trigger deep enough that it would only wake up when another failure was found. Captain Reed went pale in the air. Caleb did not answer right away.

That silence was worse than yes. Victoria stared at the jet that had once felt like a symbol of her power. Now it looked like a coffin with wings. Outside, the blizzard slammed against the hangar doors. Every second sounded expensive.
