It isn't. Maya closed the notebook. The campus outside was washed in pale afternoon light. Leaves moved across the quad in dry circles. Somewhere below, a delivery truck backed toward the dining hall, its warning beep rising and falling with mechanical patience.

Nicole looked at the battered gym bag beside Maya's desk, then at Maya. You ever get tired of being calm? Maya almost laughed all the time. That answer stayed with Nicole. Two mornings later at 4:56, she found out exactly what Maya's calm was made of.

Nicole had an early hospital internship across town. She left the dorm in navy scrubs with a travel mug in one hand and her ID badge clipped to her coat. The campus was nearly dark. Fog sat low over the grass. As she passed the athletic building, she heard something from inside.

Not music, not weights. A hard rhythmic impact, then silence, then another. Nicole slowed. The side door stood open on its automatic timer for custodial access. She stepped inside.

The hallway lights were dimmed for early morning, leaving long yellow reflections across the polished floor. Another impact sounded from the practice room. Nicole followed it. The door was open 3 in. She looked through.

Maya was alone for several seconds. Nicole simply stared. The woman she shared a room with was barefoot on the rubber floor, wearing black training pants and a dark t-shirt. Her movements were nothing like the quiet, careful way she crossed campus. They were fast, not wild, not angry, precise.

Maya pivoted and drove a sidekick into the hanging bag. The bag snapped backward. Before it returned, she had already reset. Another combination, hands, turn, kick, land, stillness. Nicole had seen martial arts in movies.

This was different. There was no showmanship, no dramatic noise. Every movement ended exactly where Maya intended it to end. Then Maya stepped back and began working a spinning technique. Nicole almost lost sight of the foot.

The heel cut through the air at head height, stopped, returned again faster. The sound of Maya's breathing stayed measured. Nicole moved slightly closer. Her shoe touched the doors stop. The door shifted.

At that exact moment, an adult maintenance worker in gray coveralls crossed the far side of the practice room carrying a box of fluorescent tubes. Maya was already turning into another kick. Nicole's stomach dropped. The maintenance worker stepped into the edge of the line. Maya saw him.

Her legs stopped. Not after impact. Before her heel froze inches from the padded stand beside his shoulder. The worker went completely still. So did Nicole.

Maya lowered her leg. Sorry. The maintenance worker stared. You do that every morning? Most.

He looked at the heavy bag, then at Maya. I suddenly feel very awake. Maya smiled faintly. He left. Nicole stayed behind the doorway.

She had seen enough to understand one thing. Tyler Grant had absolutely no idea who he was provoking. Or maybe worse, he did. Nicole backed away before Maya noticed her. By 6:20, she was sitting in the hospital employee lounge with a cold coffee and her phone in both hands.
