People are going crazy. The SAK harassment posts are getting buried. Like completely buried. Your old teammates are posting tributes, lol. Coach Benham's assistant retweeted something.

Marlon read each message without responding. He pressed a bag of frozen peas against his left cheekbone, still swollen, still hot, and watched the numbers climb. The campus tone was jubilant. Students who remembered him as a quiet, decent upperclassman were defending him loudly and without hesitation. Former teammates posted clips from his conference title matches.

Current wrestling roster members flooded the comments. The Quad Wildlife posts that Preston had spent weeks building were getting swallowed whole by a wave of counter posts that nobody in SAK had seen coming. For the first time all day, something loosened slightly in Marlon's chest. He called his mother. Doris Walter picked up on the second ring the way she always did.

Like she'd been holding the phone waiting for it. He didn't tell her everything. Not the cup, not the complaint, not the fist across his cheekbone that had scattered his papers across the grass. He just talked, told her he'd been back on campus, told her things had gotten complicated, but he was handling it. She listened the way his mother always listened, completely, without interrupting.

And when he finished, she was quiet for just a moment. "Baby," she said softly, "you sound like your daddy used to sound after he won something." Marlon smiled. First time he'd smiled all day. "Get some sleep," she told him. He did.

Better than he had any right to, considering everything. He was asleep before 10:00 and didn't wake until his phone lit up the ceiling of his bedroom at 7:14 Wednesday morning. He reached for it expecting another message from Janelle. It was an email. Official university letterhead.

Sent from the office of Caldwell University's legal counsel at 7:02 a. M. Marlon sat up. He read it once fast, the way you read something when you already sense it's bad. Then he read it again slowly, making sure he hadn't misunderstood a single word.

He hadn't. Sigma Alpha Kappa, represented by outside legal counsel, had filed a formal assault complaint against Marlon Darnell Walter, citing the incident on the South Quad on Tuesday, October 14th. In response to the complaint and in accordance with the university's alumni conduct policy, the office of student conduct was placing a secondary hold on Marlon's academic records pending the opening of a formal investigation. Combined with the anonymous complaint already on file, the university could not release transcripts or diploma documentation until the investigation reached a formal resolution. Estimated investigation timeline: 60 to 90 days.

Marlon set the phone face down on his nightstand. He sat on the edge of his bed in the gray morning light and stared at the wall. On his desk across the room, the Keller and Associates acceptance letter was visible in its open folder. Crisp white paper, clean black letterhead, the start date printed clearly near the bottom. 6 Weeks.

He picked the phone back up and opened the email again. Read the timeline one more time. 60 To 90 days. 60 To 90 days for a complaint filed by the same people who had thrown a cup at his head, taken a fist to his face, grabbed his jacket, put him on the ground, and then pointed a camera at all of it. His jaw tightened.
