It looked like a ballroom built to remind everyone who had paid for it. Warm chandelier lights spilled across polished floors. Tall cocktail tables were wrapped in white linen. Waiters moved through the crowd carrying trays of sparkling water and small plates. A jazz trio played near the glass wall overlooking the courtyard while alumni, trustees, faculty members, local executives, and donors drifted between displays showcasing Hawthorne's newest athletic research.

Everywhere Danny looked, the Blake name was waiting. On banners, on plaques, on the printed reception programs, on a towering portrait of Charles Blake beside the main staircase, Danny stood near the rehabilitation demonstration area wearing the same dark slacks she had worn earlier in the week. A clean blouse. And the old shoes Madison had already noticed. She had almost stayed home.

Rachel had told her the reception was optional for most graduate students. Professor Miller had told her no one would think less of her if she skipped it. But Danny had read the invitation twice. Graduate rehabilitation students were encouraged to attend because the evening would include demonstrations connected to the funding proposal. And something inside her refused to let Madison turn Hawthorne into a place she was afraid to enter.

So she came. Not to prove anything. Not to make a statement. Just to occupy the space she had earned. Professor Miller spotted her near the motion analysis equipment.

You all right? I'm fine. He gave her the look of a man who had heard that answer too many times to trust it. Rachel told me about the video. Danny nodded.

I filed a complaint. Good. Student affairs called it first week tension. Miller's jaw tightened. That doesn't surprise me as much as it should.

Before Danny could ask what he meant, a group of trustees approached and drew him into a conversation. Danny stepped away. Across the room, Rachel stood beside a media display with a notebook in hand, pretending to study a research poster while watching the crowd. Their eyes met. Rachel gave Danny a small nod.

Danny returned it. For several minutes, nothing happened. That almost made the tension worse. Madison moved through the reception like she belonged at the center of every conversation. She wore a pale blue dress and greeted donors by name.

Tyler followed several steps behind, laughing with former teammates and telling one story after another about his years at Hawthorne. When Madison finally noticed Danny, she did not react immediately. She finished speaking to an older trustee, touched the man lightly on the arm, smiled, then looked across the pavilion at Danny. The smile stayed. Her eyes changed.

Danny felt it. She turned back toward the rehabilitation display. A 68-year-old retired physical therapist named Margaret Cole was studying a balanced platform nearby. Does this thing actually help people walk again? Margaret asked.

Danny smiled. It can help measure how someone shifts weight after an injury. Margaret tapped the edge of the platform with one finger. Looks expensive. It is.

Figures. Danny laughed. Margaret explained that she had worked in rehabilitation for nearly four decades before retiring and still volunteered twice a month at a senior wellness center. For five minutes, Danny forgot Madison existed. She and Margaret talked about gait training, stubborn patience, and the difference between expensive technology and good hands.

Then Margaret noticed Danny glancing toward the crowd. You waiting for someone? No. That looked like a yes. Danny smiled faintly. I'm just keeping track of the room.

Margaret followed her gaze. Madison was approaching. Tyler walked beside her. Three of their friends followed behind. Margaret's expression changed.

I'm guessing that's what you were tracking. Danny did not answer. Madison stopped a few feet away. Danielle? Madison.

Her tone was bright enough to sound friendly to anyone not paying attention. I'm glad you came. Danny waited. Madison looked toward Margaret. Would you mind giving us a minute?

Margaret's eyebrows lifted. Before she could respond, Danny said, You don't have to leave. Madison's smile tightened. This is a private conversation. Then we can have it somewhere private.

No. Madison looked around the crowded pavilion. I think this is actually the perfect place. Tyler folded his arms. A few people nearby began listening. Danny felt the trap closing before Madison said another word.

Madison raised her voice just enough. I wanted to give you a chance to clear something up. Danny looked at her. What? The video.

Several heads turned. Madison continued. A lot of people saw what happened yesterday. And I think some feelings got hurt on both sides. Danny almost admired the phrasing.

No threat, no intimidation, no blame, just feelings. Madison placed one hand against her chest. My family has supported Hawthorne for years. Tyler has given a lot to this school too. And instead of showing basic respect, you came in here acting hostile toward us.

Danny felt people moving closer. Not enough to call it a crowd yet. Enough to make Madison's intention clear. You posted an edited video. I posted nothing.

One of your friends did. Madison gave a small shrug. I can't control what other people post. Tyler laughed softly. Danny looked at him.

He smiled back. Madison stepped closer. All I'm asking is that you admit you overreacted. I didn't. Then apologize for threatening my brother.

I didn't threaten him. You told him what he would do after he blocked my path. Madison's voice grew sweeter. There you go again. Danny's stomach tightened.

Again, turning everything into an attack. More people were watching now. A trustee, two alumni, several students, a member of the athletic staff. Phones began appearing. Danny saw Rachel moving closer through the crowd.
