Her eyes locked onto Grant's wrist with a precision that had nothing to do with fear. It was there and then it was gone. She caught herself the way a person catches a glass falling off a counter fast silent before it ever hits the floor. Her hand went back to her lap. "What was that?"

Grant said, grinning now, holding the broken cord up like a trophy. You collect junk jewelry. Looks like something out of a cereal box. Give it back, Ren said. Two words, quiet even.

Grant tilted his head, delighted like a dog that had just heard a new sound. Or what? The bus had gone fully silent now. Even Chase and Dylan had stopped laughing, sensing in some animal way that something in the air had shifted. Ren looked up at him for the first time.

Her eyes were calm. Not angry. Calm in a way that made the calm in the bus feel loud by comparison. I'm not looking for trouble, she said, but I'm not going to run from it either. Give it back.

Grant laughed, tossed the cord onto the floor instead, and put his boot on it. Twisted at once, slow, watching her face for a flinch. "Maybe you should learn some manners," he said. "This town doesn't need people like you taking up seats." He got up, walked to the back with his friends, already laughing about something else, already forgetting her name.

Ren waited until he sat down. Then she bent unhurried and picked the cord up off the floor. The little trident charm was scratched now, one edge dented from the sole of his boot. She closed her hand around it and said nothing at all. Up front, the driver's knuckles had gone white on the wheel.

Earl Higgins was 64 years old, built like a man who used to lift things for a living and hadn't stopped missing it. He'd watched the whole thing in the mirror above his head, the long rectangular one that showed every row. He pulled the bus to the curb at the next stop and set the brake harder than he needed to. "Hey," he called back, standing halfway out of his seat. Colton, watch your hands on my bus or I radio it in.
