Be careful with her, she said, not looking at him, moving back toward the interior. Not because she's fragile. She's not. Be careful because she's not used to being worth being careful with. She left him standing at the railing with those words doing something precise and uncomfortable in the center of his chest.

He stood there for a while after the water moved. The afternoon continued. He thought 18 months of working alongside Vanessa Caldwell, 18 months of board meetings and project reviews and late emails and one brief almost imperceptible tear at a contract win. 18 months of watching someone manage everything with immaculate precision of noticing the photograph on the shelf and not asking of hearing the phrase emotionally dishonest and filing it away as insight into a person he respected professionally. He thought, "At what point exactly does professional respect become the story you tell yourself?

Because the real story is something you're not ready to say out loud." He didn't have an answer. What he had was a wedding starting in 4 hours, a borrowed suit jacket, and a woman who was not his fianceé, who was somewhere inside that resort, being everything she was, while insisting she was nothing more than a colleague. He pushed off the railing and went back inside. The wedding was at 6:00.

At 4:30, Malcolm was ready. Charcoal shirt, navy blazer, good shoes, and sitting in the chair by the window. When Vanessa came out of the bathroom, she was wearing a deep burgundy dress. Simple cut, nothing that demanded attention. It demanded attention anyway because she was the one wearing it and because she'd put her hair up in a way that was different from the daytime version.

Something that took the weekend's softness and gave it a different kind of elegance. She stopped when she saw his face. "What?" she said. "Nothing," he said. "Your face is doing something."

"My face is doing nothing." Malcolm, you look beautiful, he said plainly. Not a performance, not a fiance line, just the true thing stated at a normal volume. She stood very still for a moment. Like the word had landed somewhere unexpected and she was waiting to see what it would do.

"Thank you," she said quietly. He stood, adjusted his jacket. Ready? She looked at him at his face, specifically the way she'd looked at him across the breakfast table that morning. That one second look that held more than 1 second's worth of something.

"Malcolm," she said. "Whatever happens tonight, I'm here." he said. All the way through it. She nodded once, picked up her small evening bag. They went down.

The ceremony was in a garden pavilion. Flowers and candle light. The particular beauty of two people choosing each other in front of everyone who loves them. Clare walked down the aisle looking like someone lit from inside. And Derek at the altar watched her come with an expression that required no performance whatsoever.

Just a man watching the person he loved walk toward him and barely holding himself together about it. Malcolm sat beside Vanessa in the second row. Their arms were touching the width of the chair requiring it. She didn't move away. Neither did he.
