Which parts? The boardroom. Trevor. Photographers. The suit.

Evelyn looked offended. That suit was excellent. The suit made me look like somebody's expensive bodyguard. You liked the suit. I tolerated the suit.

Evelyn smiled. Malcolm moved closer. Do you regret it? She looked at him for a long time. I regret why I asked.

Malcolm waited. I don't regret who I asked. This time when the distance between them disappeared, neither stepped back. Their first kiss was quiet, almost cautious, without music, cameras, or anything that could be called strategic. Afterward, Malcolm rested his forehead against hers and said, "That was definitely not in the agreement."

Evelyn whispered, "Adrien will be devastated." 7 months after the courthouse ceremony, the contract reached its final day. Trevor was gone from Nexora. The investigations continued without dominating their lives. Malcolm's mortgage was current, his debt manageable, and his back improving with treatment.

Norah had gone to school that morning with Darlene because Malcolm had an early medical appointment. By midafternoon, Evelyn arrived at Alder Street carrying a slim folder. Malcolm knew what it contained before she set it on the kitchen table. Divorce papers. The document was not a threat.

It was the final obligation they had agreed to honor. Evelyn sat in the same chair she had occupied on the morning she offered Malcolm $320,000. Malcolm's navy flannel hung over the back of the opposite chair because she had worn it the previous evening and left it behind again. The old coffee machine clicked behind them. Evelyn rested her hand on the folder.

So, this is it. Malcolm looked at the signature lines. That's what we agreed. Evelyn nodded with more composure than she felt. Then we should sign.

Malcolm picked up the pen. For a few seconds, he studied the paper. The 7 months earlier, signing documents had meant survival, money, a roof, protection for Nora. He had entered the marriage believing every important part of it could be measured in obligations and deadlines. Then Evelyn protected Nora when doing so hurt her strategy.

She stayed after the cameras left. She learned the sound Malcolm made when his back hurt and the exact serial Norah preferred. She surrendered control of Nexora rather than risk exposing a child to Trevor's war. Malcolm had walked back into the Meridian Club, not because a contract required him to save Evelyn, but because leaving her alone felt impossible. He set the pen down.
