Lia had stopped flinching at the sound of her own phone. That more than anything had told Henry she was coming back to herself. Denise was at the table that night, too. It had been Lia's idea to invite her, and Henry had agreed without hesitation because the woman had spent two years carrying a stone and had finally begun to set it down. And a family did not heal by leaving people out in the cold.

The thing between Denise and Henry had not been pretended away. It had been spoken and forgiven, and that was sturdier than pretending. When the plates had been cleared, Henry ran his hand along the edge of the table and stopped because he recognized it. The dark grain, the deep luster, the particular way the corners had been joined. He had built this table.

Eight months back before any of it, Rosetti's had commissioned a walnut table from a small shop in need of the work, and he had built it in his sawdust-smelling workshop, never imagining who would one day sit at it. The coincidence of it struck him as something more than coincidence. And before the feeling could pass, he reached into his jacket, the same jacket mended now, and took out the ring. The ring the paramedics had pulled from the wreck. The ring Liya had carried in her coat for 2 days, not knowing what else to do with it.

She had given it back to him months ago, quietly, and told him that when the time was right, he would know, and not to waste it on a hospital or a courtroom or anywhere their worst memories lived. He came around the table, lowered himself to one knee beside her chair, and the room around them seemed to quiet. "I tried to ask you this once before," Henry said, "on a road in the rain, and the world did everything it could to keep me from finishing the sentence. I don't remember saying it, so let me say it now where I'll remember it for the rest of my life. " He held the ring up between them. "I spent 2 years deciding what was best for you from a safe distance.

I'm done deciding things alone. Marry me, Liya. Stay with me and let me stay with you. No walls. No stepping back.

Just this. " Liya was crying and laughing at once, and Denise had her hand pressed to her mouth across the table, and the answer came out of Liya before he had even finished. "Yes," she said. "Yes, of course yes. " He slid the ring onto her finger at the table he had built with his own hands in a life he had nearly talked himself out of believing he deserved, and when he rose to kiss her, the whole room seemed to exhale. Across the table, Denise wept openly, and this time there was nothing buried underneath it.

No guilt, no secret, no thing too large to say. Only the plain, late, hard-won relief of watching two people she loved finally arrive where they had been trying to go all along. Outside the night was clear. No storm, no headlights in the mirror. Just a quiet street and a warm room and a man who had learned at last that staying was the bravest thing he would ever do.
