Relax, stay with me. Victoria Hayes whispered those four words into the darkness, and Darius Coleman felt them hit somewhere deep in his chest that no woman had reached in four years. He was bleeding from his knuckles. She was shaking so hard, her teeth were almost chattering. They were trapped between floors 30 stories up, the elevator cable groaning above them like it was deciding whether to hold.

And somewhere below them, a man they both knew was cutting the last wire that would have saved their lives. She had $300 million, a corner office, and an army of people who answered to her name. Right now in the dark, none of that mattered. Right now, she was just a woman pressing her hand against a man's chest. Whispering, "Relax! " like she was trying to convince herself as much as him.

And Darius, a man who had spent four years becoming invisible, realized that tonight someone had finally seen him. The call came at 11:47 p.m. Darius almost didn't answer it. He was sitting at the kitchen table with his boots still on. A halfeaten plate of reheated pasta going cold beside him and his eyes barely open.

The television in the living room was running some sports recap he hadn't actually watched in 20 minutes. His body was present. His mind had already gone to sleep without him. His phone buzzed across the table, skipping toward the edge like it was trying to escape. Dispatch Hayes Global HQ.

Emergency call. Backup power failure. Immediate response required. Darius stared at the screen. He pressed his thumb and forefinger against the bridge of his nose, held them there for three full seconds, then exhaled through his mouth the way his grandfather used to when life handed him something unreasonable.

"All right," he said to nobody. He pushed back from the table, carried his plate to the sink, rinsed it without thinking, and walked down the short hallway to a bedroom door that was cracked open just enough. He pushed it gently with two fingers. Inside, his daughter Maya was asleep on her side, one arm thrown over the edge of the mattress, her phone face down on the nightstand, a half-finish homework worksheet still spread under her elbow. She was 12 years old and had her mother's forehead and his stubbornness and he would move mountains before he let anything touch her.

He watched her breathe for a moment. Then he pulled the door almost all the way closed. Texted his neighbor, Mrs. Pette, "Sorry to bother you this late. Emergency call.

Maya's asleep. Shouldn't wake up, but can you check in if you hear anything? " Got a reply back in 40 seconds that just said go. I got her and grabbed his tool bag from the hallway closet. He was out the door by midnight. The storm had been building since midafter afternoon.
