It occurred to her, watching him, that she had spent 15 years surrounded by men in expensive suits who would have called an assistant before touching a wire themselves, and none of them had ever once made her feel as safe as this stranger in a gas station parking lot at 2:00 in the morning. She did not say any of that out loud. She simply watched him work and let the observation settle somewhere she would return to later. It was in that same lot that Malcolm finally plugged the flash drive into an old laptop he kept in the truck for work logs. Curiosity finally outweighing caution.

A video file opened automatically the moment the drive connected and Viven's own face filled the screen recorded in what looked like a hotel room 3 days before the crash. "If you are watching this," the recorded Vivien said, her voice flat with the particular calm of someone preparing for the worst. Then Malcolm Vance is already involved whether he agreed to it or not. Malcolm went very still. The woman beside him in the truck looked just as stunned as he felt, her hand rising slightly toward the screen as though she could stop the words from having already been spoken.

"Neither of them said anything for a long moment, the only sound the rain drumming steady against the roof of the truck." "How did you know my name?" Malcolm finally asked and Viven shook her head slowly, insisting that she had not known it. Not before tonight, not until this very drive. The video knew, he said, and the accusation sat heavy in the small cab of the truck. Viven stared at the paused frame of her own face on the screen, and something like genuine fear moved across her features for the first time since he had pulled her off the tracks. Whoever had orchestrated tonight had not simply arranged an accident.

They had researched Malcolm specifically weeks or months in advance and built his name into a plan that predated the moment he had ever laid eyes on her. That kind of preparation did not belong to an accident at all. It belonged to something with far more patience and far more resources than either of them wanted to consider out loud. He spent the next half hour paging through work records on his phone, cross- referencing maintenance logs against dates he remembered clearly, and what he found made his stomach turn slower and colder than the rain outside ever could. Several inspection reports bore his digital signature approving repairs he had never performed.

Timestamps placed at hours when he had been nowhere near those particular junctions. Someone had been quietly building a paper trail that made Malcolm Vance look like a man who had signed off on faulty equipment for months. A man who might plausibly be blamed for exactly the kind of sabotage that had nearly killed the woman now sitting beside him. It was not an accusation waiting to happen. It was a conviction already being assembled, brick by careful brick, long before tonight's crash had given it a body to attach itself to.
