Daniel watched him operate and understood with complete clarity why Lauren described him the way she did. The man was not cruel. He was not vindictive. He was simply so good at managing systems that he'd stopped being able to tell the difference between a system and a person. Daniel drove home at 9:00.

Amara was already in bed. He checked on her sleeping arm thrown over her face the way she always did. Her book on the floor where it had fallen. He picked it up, set it on her nightstand. He stood there for a minute looking at her.

I thought about what it meant to protect a child. The real version of it. Not the version that meant removing every risk and controlling every variable and managing every relationship she had with the outside world. The real version where you give them the tools to navigate a world you can't control for them and then you step back and trust that the tools are good enough. He thought about Richard.

I thought about how Richard probably stood in Lauren's room when she was nine and felt exactly this. This fierce consuming certainty that he would move heaven and earth to make sure nothing ever went wrong for her. And how that feeling, unchecked over 20 years, had quietly calcified into something that felt to Richard like love and felt to Lauren like a cage. He went to bed. The next morning, his phone rang at 7:45.

Not Lauren, not Marcus. A number he didn't recognize. Atlanta area code. He almost didn't answer. He answered, "Is this Daniel Brooks? " A man's voice.

Professional. Careful. Who's asking? My name is Calvin Ree. I'm the COO of Meridian Transport out of Atlanta.

I got your name from a colleague of mine who says you're the best fleet operations manager he's come across in the southeast. A pause. I'm not calling to poach you. I just we have a senior director position coming open in Q1 and your name keeps coming up in conversations. I wanted to introduce myself.

Daniel stood in his kitchen in the morning light and said nothing for 3 seconds. How did you get this number? He said, "I'd rather not say specifically, but I'll tell you it came through a channel that thinks highly of you. " Daniel thought about this carefully. Calvin Ree, Meridian Transport, Atlanta, senior director. The kind of call that does not happen accidentally.

The kind of call that sometimes happens when someone with resources wants to create options for someone they've decided they want out of a particular situation. Or the kind of call that happens when someone with resources wants to give someone they care about a way out before the situation gets worse. "I wasn't sure which this was yet. " "I appreciate the call, Mr. Ree," he said carefully. "I'm not looking right now, but I'd be open to a conversation. " "That's all I'm asking for," Ree said.

He hung up and stood there. His mind went immediately to Lauren, then immediately away from it because assuming she'd arranged this felt presumptuous. Then immediately back to it because who else would have done it and why? He texted her, "Did you call someone in Atlanta? " 3 minutes passed. 4 7 her reply came.
