The door closed. Halston believed the record now protected him. Sophie had just protected the truth. Ethan walked to the terminal window. Aircraft 2114 remained connected to the gate.

He knew that airplane intimately. Meridian Air Holdings had approved its acquisition three years earlier. Ethan had signed the final capital authorization. Yet he had said nothing because ownership was not supposed to be the price of basic fairness. He took out his phone and called Daniel Cross.

Daniel answered on the second ring from the airport operations office a few minutes away. Flight operations. Daniel, Ethan. Daniel's voice changed instantly. Mr. Caldwell?

I'm at gate 24. A pause. You're supposed to be on 214. The crew denied me boarding. Silence.

Why? That's what we're about to establish. Put 214 on executive operational hold. No pushback. Lock the passenger record, crew report, acknowledgement history, and gate audit so nothing can be changed.

Daniel started typing. Done. Come to gate 24 with the station operations manager. I'm on my way. Ethan checked his watch.

And Daniel? Yes. Don't tell the crew who ordered the hold. Daniel understood immediately. Understood.

Ethan ended the call. In the cockpit, Halston requested pushback clearance. Dispatch denied it. He requested again. Denied.

The operations display changed. Executive compliance hold. Remain at gate. Claire entered the cockpit. Is this about that passenger?

Halston looked annoyed. He probably called customer service. He acted like he knew somebody. Halston gave a dismissive laugh. Everybody acts important when they don't get what they want.

The cockpit phone rang. Dispatch repeated the instruction. Remain at gate. Halston demanded the name of whoever had ordered the hold. You'll be briefed by station management, came the answer.

The first hint of uncertainty appeared on his face. Claire was told to reopen the aircraft door. Halston came back into the jet bridge furious. Who put my flight on hold? Sophie had no answer for him.

Then Daniel Cross appeared at the end of the concourse with station operations manager Evelyn Price. Halston walked toward them. Daniel, what is going on? Daniel passed him without answering. He passed Claire, too.

Then he stopped directly in front of Ethan. Mr. Caldwell, aircraft 214 is secured. The records are locked as requested. Claire froze. Halston stared at Daniel, then at Ethan.

Mr. Caldwell? Ethan reached inside his jacket and removed his corporate identification. No dramatic gesture. No raised voice. He simply held it where Halston could read the words beneath the photograph.
