The elevator at the end of the hall opened. Victoria Harrington stepped out. She walked down the hall with that measured authoritative pace and people who had gathered there moved out of her path the way they always did. But this time one or two of them didn't quite move fast enough and she noticed. She opened the conference room door.

The room changed when she entered it. Not in a dramatic way. There was no shift in expression on anyone's face. No theatrical pause in a conversation. But she felt it the way you feel the difference in air pressure between two rooms, even before you consciously process that one of them has a window open.

She had walked into countless rooms that shifted around her. She had always been the reason for the shift. She took her usual chair halfway down the table, the power position for someone running a meeting, but not chairing it, and she opened her mouth to speak. Richard Coleman spoke first. Victoria," he said.

"Thank you for coming." She nodded. "Richard." She looked across the table. "Mr. Thompson."

Caleb met her eyes directly. He nodded once. "I think Victoria said that someone needs to explain to me what is happening." "That's fair," Richard said. He folded his hands on the table.

"I should have done this differently. I should have made sure this was not possible." He glanced at Caleb. Caleb, do you want to take this? Caleb looked at Victoria for a long moment.

She held his gaze and she found with the discomfort she did not allow to show on her face that his gaze was not what she expected. She expected anger. She expected the barely contained satisfaction of a person who has been wronged and has arrived at the moment of reckoning. What she found instead was something that had no hostility in it at all, just attention. The focused, complete attention of someone who sees you.

Not your position, not your power, not the office on the top floor or the decisions you've made or the title on your business card. Someone who sees the person inside all of that and is waiting to find out who that person actually is. It was the most unsettling thing she had experienced in a professional setting in years. Victoria Caleb said, my full name is Caleb Aaron Thompson. I'm the majority shareholder of Harrington International.
