Malik felt Eli's small shoulder tighten against his arm. Evelyn did not move at first. She only straightened, one hand flattening against the edge of a linen-covered table as if the cloth might anchor her. "Daniel, " she said, and the name landed softly, but the room heard the history inside it. The late-arriving man opened his arms as though the scene had been waiting for him.

"There's my boy. " Eli's fingers found the seam of Malik's sleeve and held on. Daniel noticed that, and something in his face sharpened by a degree. He laughed for the room, low and easy. "Sorry, folks.

Traffic. You know how it is. " Then his gaze settled on Malik's shoes, his plain jacket, the paper bracelet from the visitor desk still around his wrist. "And you are? " The pearl-earring woman, too interested to hide it, shifted her weight closer.

Chairs scraped the floor in little nervous notes. Malik did not answer fast. He crouched first, bringing himself level with Eli, letting the boy see his eyes. "You want to go stand with your mom? " he asked quietly, "or stay right here for a minute?

Not pressure, a choice. " Eli's mouth parted, then closed again. Daniel gave a short breath through his nose. "That's cute, " he said, "but I asked you a question. " Evelyn stepped in then, heels clicking once against the polished floor.

"He's here with me. " Daniel turned to her with a look that belonged in private and had arrived in public anyway. "With you? " he repeated, "as what exactly? " The room went thinner after that.

Even the staff woman pushing a supply cart near the back slowed to a stop, one wheel squeaking, then holding still. Evelyn's chin lifted, but Malik could see the pulse beating fast at the base of her throat. Daniel spread one hand toward the stage where the children's drawings still hung under bright fluorescent lights. "So, this is the solution? " he said.

"You bring in a stranger for Father's Day and hope nobody notices? " A few faces dropped. A few others leaned in. He had chosen his audience well. Not a family argument now, a trial.

Malik rose to his full height, calm as a closed door. "Eli doesn't need a scene, " he said. Daniel smiled without warmth. "You don't get to tell me what my son needs. " It was the first time he had said my son since walking in.
