That evening Daniel sat beneath the oak his father had planted from a sapling.

As a child, Daniel once asked why his father bothered planting a tree that would take years to become useful.

His father had answered:

“Because one day you’ll need shade.”

Daniel smiled at the memory.

His phone rang.

Rachel.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“The demonstration aircraft.”

Daniel sat upright.

“They actually found a pilot?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Private operator. He apparently believed the runway was authorized.”

“Does he know now?”

“We notified him.”

“Will he land?”

“He says he will follow lawful operational instructions.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Good.”

Rachel hesitated.

“Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t put yourself in danger.”

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

Daniel looked across the dark runway.

“I promise.”

Grand Opening

The next morning was hot and cloudless.

By ten o’clock, SUVs filled the temporary parking area. Residents arrived dressed for celebration, investors gathered in small groups, children moved along the edge of the crowd, and champagne bottles sat in silver buckets beneath white event tents.

Patricia stood near the temporary stage wearing a cream pantsuit and the same white hard hat Daniel had seen on his first afternoon home.

Curtis Bale remained close to the aviation display.

A large banner stretched behind them.

SILVER CREEK PRIVATE AIRPARK — OPENING DAY

Daniel parked on the Mercer side of the boundary.

The sheriff waited farther down the county road with two deputies.

State aviation inspectors were already present.

So was a process server carrying copies of the court injunction.

Local television had arrived because Patricia invited them.

Daniel could not have arranged a better audience if he tried.

At 10:25, Patricia stepped onto the stage.

“Today,” she began, “Silver Creek Estates enters a new era.”

Applause.

She talked about innovation.

Property value.

Community vision.

Private aviation access.

A future in which residents could leave their homes and be airborne within minutes.

Then Patricia said the sentence Daniel had been waiting for.

“This project is fully authorized, legally secured, and built on land obtained with the cooperation of all necessary property interests.”

Daniel glanced toward the television cameras.

Good.

She had said it clearly.

Harold, standing among the residents, looked toward him.

Daniel remained still.

Patricia continued.

She thanked Curtis Bale for navigating the “regulatory complexities.”

Curtis smiled weakly.

Then Patricia announced the demonstration aircraft would arrive shortly.

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Rachel.

Aircraft has been instructed not to land. Pilot acknowledged.

Daniel slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Patricia lifted oversized ceremonial scissors.

A red ribbon had been stretched across the edge of the runway.

Before she could cut it, the sheriff walked forward.

“Mrs. Vaughn.”

Patricia’s smile disappeared.

“Sheriff, we’re in the middle of a private event.”

“I know.”

He handed her a document.

“You have already been served with the court injunction. This is a certified enforcement copy.”

“I’m aware of the order.”

“Then you’re aware that no operation may occur on this runway.”

Patricia glanced at the television cameras.

“This is ceremonial.”

“Then there won’t be any problem.”

Curtis walked toward them.

“The court order is being appealed.”

“It has not been stayed,” Daniel said.

Patricia turned sharply.

“You don't get to speak for the court.”

“No.”
